Steptronic not shifting in manual

Hello everyone, long time BMW guy first post on this site...i have been a member for a while on another 5 series site that is slowly loosing ground.
So my problem is one that seems to be common. My steptronic will shift into DS but when i go to Manual mode i cant shift the gears? Probably one or two of the wires are broke? I have removed the gear stick, boot and wood overlay but cant get good access to the wires. That plastic shroud is held in with one small screw but there is not enough room to remove. What have you done or is their a step by step on this forum somewhere? Thank you
