I've not done it, but have always heard it's quite easy, hair dryer to heat the glue, dental floss to pry them off, wipe off the glue.. I'm sure someone that has done it will chime in, but no, you're not mad for attempting yourself. I've also heard the newer the car, the easier it is to do.

I did some FIND on page searches for TRUNK and a lot of discussion occurred below in the comments section. If you are having trouble, just consult those. The replacement of the rear should be the same as long as the rear trunk mechanism isn't in the way. A great way to remove the emblems without scratching your paint is to use dental floss or something like this using nylon strapping used for banding pallets:
