new 135 & I hate my GPS
the GPS in my new 135 (has 3500km on it) sucks ass. it doesn't read the street names, it has made up names and says "turn right on S5"... course no one knows what the hell S5 is... It doesn't tell me on the screen my next turn or any other information other than an estimated arrival time. In my Z4m the GPS was a lot better. I have scoured the interwebs and have been unable to find any options that will fix this. Anyone have any ideas?? Other than the GPS I am enjoying the car.

MkIV(nav in your Z4M) is probably the best unit that will ever exist, especially once upgraded with the hacked Nav software the X-Outpost guys developed and the Intravee II.

This is why I stick with Garmin GPS units...easily upgradable/fixed, and they work perfectly every time. Lifetime maps and traffic updates via USB cable from your home computer. Under $200, unless you want to go to a 7" screen, and then it's $300. Easy operation, including voice command, spoken street names and so forth. BMW wants what, over $2K for theirs? Hardly worth it. Several of my friends with BMW NAV strongly dislike it, so you're not alone.

I also use and recommend Garmins. I have a 885t on a homemade bracket to the left of the instruments. In some ways mounting to the right of the instruments is better (passengers access is a lot better) and BMW makes a bracket for that. I have a Garmin going all the time in both my vehicles. I don't use them for navigation all the time but they give you an accurate speed reading and also tell you the speed limit on most roads. If I need them for navigation, they are ready to go.
The 885t is an old, out of manufacture, voice controlled unit that BMW used to rebrand as their Portable Performance Pro model. I use a 765t in my other vehicle and other than lacking voice control it is in some ways better. I use these old models in part because I store music on them. I may switch to storing music on my phone and then the newer Garmins would be fine. Phones are a good backup option for navigation but the interface is not nearly as good as a Garmin IMHO. Garmins display things well (like next turn indicators) and big enough to can see it at a glance. The verbal instructions are also pretty decent and you can customize the voice and even what they say (mine say "Sorry I messed up, I'll try again" instead of "Recalculating", for instance). Lots better value than the BMW navigation.

i love my navigation....have no complaints at all. mind you, i rarely depend on it completely. i am still pretty old school in that i STUDY the maps for where i'm going before i go and memorize the directions. I keep the Nav on as an 'aid'.
That being said....NYC can be pretty confusing in the boroughs and my Nav has always done a great job here! perhaps the australian info is out of date? do you have the latest software? |

I pusposely didin't order nav in my 135. I have it in my RX and I don't care for it as a navigation tool.
I'm another believer that a $200 Garmin or even your iPhone is actually better and cheaper.

Luckily my SA told me to do that when I picked up my car. Otherwise, I would never have thought I would have to have this content shown on the split screen. I can't believe this isn't part of the main navigation display.

S5 etc is usually the code name or whatever its called. For example in Sydney all highways have an uncommon name like S1. The motorways everyone refers to by the code name such as M2(hills motorway), M4(Western Motorway). But no1 knows the highways even though it shows the uncommon name on the signage.
I would guess S5 is Great Western Highway: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Highwa...ew_South_Wales So whenever I hear "S#" I take it as "look for the next big street".
