Mounting Radar Low
I've read on Radar Roy's sight that one should actually mount the detector low since a lasar is only 18" wide at a distance of about 500' and police aim for your license place, headlights, or bumper for a good reading.. So one should mount it low in order to pick this up, also while keeping it clear of visual obstruction and such...
Thoughts, comments? I'll be mounting my V1 this weekend and am quite curious

I've detected lidar everytime and have mine mounted high up behind the rear view mirror, I'm using a passport but the V1 should be just as good or better

As as far as laser is concerned that makes sense. Don't have knowledge to verify but I would say that is true.
As for radar the spectrum will bounce off of your fenders and hood projecting it upwards causing it to high higher up on the windshield. Also, if mounted low I don't feel you would get good coverage from behind. That's just my 2 cents. Hopefully somebody who is more educated than me can chime in and shed some light on the subject

The information given regarding mounting your radar detector low to detect laser (LIDAR) is not correct. In more than 95% of encounters with LIDAR, a radar detector will not help you avoid a ticket. It takes a LIDAR gun under 0.4 seconds to obtain a speed reading on your car. By the time you hear your radar detector alert, the officer already has recorded your speed. If you want to avoid speeding tickets from LIDAR, you must purchase laser jammers.
Because the LIDAR bean is so narrow, the chance of your radar detector detecting it when another car is targeted is very small. To place your radar detector in a spot that will reduce its radar detecting ability goes against logical thought. Unlike radar which only acts like an electromagnetic wave, LIDAR is light and behaves with properties as a mix of; particles (photon) and electromagnetic wave. Because of acting like a particle Lidar behaves much differently. The best laser jammers are the AntiLaser Priority, also known as the ALP or AL Priority. www.raletc.org |

radar detectors low on dash give you the best performance but not against laser, they will alert you that you just got a ticket but that's it.. as far as a jammer goes, the laser intercepter of the blinder are right now, the top two units and both mount in the front grill by the licence plate. so for the radar detector, mount it where its most convenient, as far as a laser jammer, THATS very specific as to where to mount.. enjoy.

I mounted my laser shifters (as escort calls them) behind the grilling in front of the intercooler. the installer wanted to hang them off the bumper but i want *nothing* showing outside of the car. they work quite well there - maybe not as good but every time I've seen them work I've not received a ticket except for that one time when i was the only person on the road and threw out the anchor when i got zapped.
