Where are the experts?

Not sure why I am not getting answers to simple questions.
2000 X5 4.4L.
Is the screw in plug in the rear end the same one used for draining purposes?
I need to check the fluid in the back since there is very little drips, nothing major.
Also, is it difficult changing the silicone around the cover? It is only leaking around the cover not from the front or side seals.

Another issue: Do I need to change the thermostat if changing the water pump? Do I need to add silicone to the water pump gasket, or just use the gasket? Which type of silicone is good?

One more: Is there a drain and fill plug for the tranny? I need to check on the fluid level.

Thanks to all who can participate in advance.
