Video: BMW microNavigation Technology In Development
BIMMERPOST NEWS Video: BMW microNavigation Technology In Development BMW provides a look into the development of their prototype microNavigation which provides an even more detailed guide and navigation experience than the current generation of navigation software. The goal is to provide a detailed guide from your origin to a destination as precise as a specific parking garage level. |

He forgot to roll in his mirrors when he got out in that tight parking space. (shudder)
But seriously, this looks like a nice step up. The problem with current Nav systems is that they don't really offer a lot over the print-the-map-at-home-before-you-go strategy. This kind of detail might bring folks like me on board who consider Nav kinda pointless. I couldn't tell if it was included here or not, but they need that cool Mercedes feature where you can search Google maps and download your route to your car before you leave the house.

This feature is already available in the latest ConnectedDrive / Navigation versions.

My experience with my 2010 vehicle is that it sends the destination address to your car. However, - if the car's database doesn't have the new-ish address that can be found on Googlemaps, it won't work - the car's database can give you a different route than appears on Googlemaps. For the destinations I've tried, Googlemaps not infrequently has better routing. Does the latest version of BMW Nav improve on this?

I was speaking about being able to send a google maps destination from computer/phone to the car's navigation, so I'm not sure about the entire route. Perhaps someone who has the latest navigation build/version can speak on this.

I read about this a couple years ago when they were first considering it.
Imagine your destination is a store within a shopping mall. Currently navs will get you to the generic street address for the entire mall. However, this will tell you where within the mall's parking lot you will need to go to get as close as possible. That way you're not searching the whole mall for your destination. Or think of the same situation for a sprawling apartment complex that has the same street for all of its units. This will get you as close as possible, etc.

Good to see that this is how in-car navigation systems are evolving. Some interesting points in here about routing options and specificity as well.

No. MY2011 BMW 550i with iDrive/GPS can only receive the destination address, not the actual route; it leaves the car logic to figure that much out.

when highways are layered on top of one another... then nav fails (currently) I believe many cell phones now have barometric pressure devices if not present then accounted for in chip architectural design so one can geo position in x,y,z natural progression after that is cars..laptops etc.. ~Frost

A good step in the right direction. Several times, I have two back to back turns, and am nowhere close to the correct lane I need to be in.
I would simply appreciate BMW just being able to show the map, and the next TWO turns so it would be easier. |

I don't know that I'd call it a POS but I'm definitely not happy with the routes the car chooses. On my Honda, it would give me separate routes I could choose from: fastest, easiest and avoid highways for example. Unfortunately, BMW nav seems to default to the shortest route, which can often involve lots of slow, bumpy, side road driving. Maybe there is a way to change this but it wasn't easy to locate.
