Got a Z4 as a loaner/etc..another long post from me

As a lot of people know...I've had hell with my car lately (most on my own account). For some reason, there aren't a lot of shops here for aftermarket installs. So getting my coils done right/completed was a pain in the ass. I finally got it all done. But during all this, my brakes started squealing. And it got really bad.

At first, I thought it was too much of a coincidence that it starts right after I get my coils on But after driving it for a little bit and reading so many other threads on here about others having brake squeal, I decided to take it in to the dealer. I only have a couple months/4K miles left on my warranty.

I was pretty nervous doing this. I left my JB4 in and right now, my car is sitting REALLY low.

But my SA was cool. He said there is a TSB out that if the pads get below 7.5mm, they should be replaced. And he said they know that the sensors have been causing these noises. And I read how so many others have had this problem and got everything replaced and the problem was gone....only to come back. I CAN NOT deal with that.

During all this, I became so frustrated that I decided I could not take the stress (self-inflicted mostly I know) of worrying about this anymore. So I decided that if this squeal was not gone completely or came back, I am getting a new Dodge Ram 1500 Sport. I've been wanting to go back to a truck anyway.

So anyway, when I got up there, they had their usual 328's lined up. At the back of the lineup was a new Z4 Sdrive 35i. I asked my SA "You guys give Z4's as loaners?" He said sometimes. I was telling him how I don't care if they give me a damn pinto. Just getting a car to drive for free makes me happy. I've NEVER had a dealer give me a car to drive before owning this car.

So the lady comes out and tells me I'm getting the Z4. I was happy and irritated at the same time. I need a back seat. But I wanted to see how it drives.

I've never been a roadster or a convertable fan. So as far as looks, I don't like it..especially the older Z's. But I do like the newer ones better. I like it from the rear and from the front...it's from the side I don't like it.

But it grew on me over the days. I had it from Saturday through Thursday. I love the way it sounds, drives and handles compared to my car when it was stock. The auto is boring to me but it was a nice break from my MT. I got to where I looked forward to getting into it every day. And backing up is nice with that short rear end. I assume this is the same motor as the 335is? It definately felt quite a bit faster than my car did stock of course. Seemed like it had less turbo lag and better acceleration up top.

Anyway, this whole experience with BMW really helped keep my enthusiasm for them. My dealer here has been really good to me. So that helps. So as long as I don't have any more squeaking...I guess I'll put the truck on hold...even though I want one so bad.

Sorry this was so long...just wanted to share....I could talk more about the Z4 experience...

Nice writeup, I enjoyed it. I've always wondered how the Z4/35 (I refuse to say the entire name) drove to see if it was just a chick car or not. Could you really feel the weight of that hard top?

You know that's what I was going to mention. I assumed they were lighter? I didn't look up the weight. I thought it felt lighter and couldn't tell any difference from the hard top. The trunk suprisinly has some room too. It was definately fun to drive. The steering wheel is cool and I like how the a/c controls are laid out. The seats were harder it seemed though. It would be brutal to drive it every day. Seems like a weekend car to me...which I guess that's what they're supposed to be.

I kept it in sport + mode the whole time. That made the ride pretty rough. But that made me realize that my car is supposed to be that way with coils.

The sDrive 35i has the same engine as the 135i/335i/535i. The sDrive 35is has the same engine as the 1M/335is.

You've got 170K on the 335i? Post a photo showing the temp gauge and ODO... that is unbelievable.

I just realized I was looking at a review on a 35is when I looked up the specs. I searched for only i and it still had to show me the is.
