Powdercoating Rotors??
The wheels I have are an open design so you see into the wheel to the rotor and caliper. The rotors (not the actual disk) but the hats and veins, and outer edge of the rotors get rusty. Looks ugly. I end up cleaning them up with zero steel wool. It’s a bitch!
Thinking it would be a simple upgrade to have new "powdercoated" rotors or to powdercoat the stock ones in black. (not the entire thing- just outer edges and hats/veins) I have seen them done- do people get them coated or does someone manufacture them this way out of the box? Looking to do this on an X5M and M3. Cant stand the rust. Any info is appreciated, thanks! |

Im a lıttle confused. Do you want to powdercoat the calıper or the actual brake rotor? I had zınc coated rotors on my 03 Cobra and they dont rust...could be an optıon Ive never heard of powdercoatıng the rotor...seems lıke the coatıng would ınterfere wıth brakıng or at the very least come off under brakıng.
edıt: nevermınd I just reread your post...readıng comprehensıon not one of my strong poınts. It thınk what you are suggestıng would be a pretty cool ıdea and ı am ınterested ın seeıng the results ıf you go for ıt.

If Zinc coated rotors will not rust that would solve the problem too. |

I had the Stop Tech bıg brake kıt on my Turbo 03 Cobra and ıt came wıth zınc coated rotors...not a bıt of rust and I lıked the platınum gold color a lot too. I also went wıth slotted rotors ınstead of the drılled ones. The slotted tend to hold up better than the drılled whıch tend to crack.

Caliper paint (spray, at Autozone) works on the rotor hat as well... I painted my old M3 rotors hat red. My next M3 rotors hat will be black with the same spray paint.

You don't want to PC the face of the rotor or the hub, because you'll end up with vibrations, since there is so little tolerance there.
With Aluminum hats, there shouldn't be much corrosion, I'd just clean it up and spray it with WD40 :P |

My Stoptech rotors came zinc coated and after 5 track days there is not a hint of zinc anywhere on the rotors.Waste of time to do anything to rotors!

+1 You don't honestly expect that painted rotor to stay that way do you. What stops a car? Friction. Don't you think the friction from the brake pads will sand away the paint/coating in about 10 mins?

Why would friction from the brake pads sand away the paint coating in the areas where the brake pad does NOT contact the rotor? If you read my post it talks about "outer edges / rotor hats" the areas that dont come in contact with the pad.
