Biglare's 1M Delivery 2800 Mile Roadtrip (warning tons tons of pics)
I have purchased my previous three M3's from BMW of Austin, so when I was interested in in the 1M naturally BMW of Austin was who I called. They already had a list going, but I jumped on it right anyway. As the allocation time was closing in they started contacting the people on the list and to my surprise some people backed out and I was able to receive their first allocation. The order was placed and within 7 weeks the car arrived at the dealership. Now, how to pickup the 1M?
I had a 135i that I was trying to sell before the 1M arrived, but there were no buyers at the time. So this meant that I am driving the 135i to Austin and then driving back to San Diego with the 1M. I knew it was going to be a long trip with a very quick turn-around and I solicited a few people to make the trip with me at the last minute, however I ended up going solo. I left San Diego last Thursday midday for Austin. I made it to Las Cruces, NM by nightfall. Friday morning I left for Austin and made it around 7pm. Saturday was the BIG day to pickup the 1M. Arrived at dealer around 10am for the delivery process. After taking delivery and a short visit with some family I taped up the front end of the 1M. I left Austin around 6pm to Phoenix, but only made it to Van Horn, TX. Sunday morning I left and made it to Phoenix by 4pm. I visited with some friends and family for the night. Monday afternoon finally made the home stretch back to San Diego. Total mileage roundtrip was over 2800 miles between the 135 and 1M which went better than expected. Special Thanks to Ilia and IND for getting my first mods delivered as soon as I made it home. Here are a few pictures from the trip and then finally a quick review of the 1M from the drive home. The journey begins! Some wind power! Nice E46 M3 close to Tucson Time to refuel This should keep me going Sunset Getting closer Goodmorning 135i Nice! Little did I know that the 135i would be searched for 30 mins here! Haha! Yummm! Thank You Texas! Storm approaching Austin Arrived in Austin Last night with the 135i At BMW of Austin Saturday morning! Folding rear seats! BMW of Austin's waiting area is like no other I've seen! iPhone video playback 1M and 135i Comparison Pics All Taped up and somewhere to go! Time to hit the road home Chicken Fried Steak..... Yumm! Texas art! Sunset Morning in Van Horn, TX Mexico Runs? Train racing! The Thing! Back in AZ Taping blowout! Almost home Time for break-in service! First mods installed Special Thanks to Ilia at IND!!! The drive back to San Diego from Austin allowed me to review the 1M from a roadtrip perspective. The ride is firm, but comfortable for a roadtrip. The seats are fully adjustable to any position for the long roadtrip. At cruising speed the mpg was about 23.5 and the cabin noise is minimal. There is a small rpm range where some exhaust tone is apparent, but not too loud. As for the handling of this car..... it is AMAZING so far! It is right on par with the stock M3 as it should be. The steering is responsive and the car reacts to the smallest input with direct results. On some mountain twisties it was very nimble and a complete joy! As for the power, it has gobs of torque and just pulled up every incline with ease. When the "M" button is pressed it is like an instant tune with more power and quicker throttle response! I have not had a chance to run it close to redline as the break-in service was just performed, but future reviews will come very soon. For now a proper detail and pictures will be on tap. I cannot wait to take this Baby M to the track!

This is the stock part painted by IND as the replacement part was not available at the time I needed them before delivery of the 1M. IND has a quick turnaround on these pieces and I'll be doing an install thread soon!

I'm surprised you only got 23.5 mpg, I got over 27mpg in my 135i from Houston to St. Louis going over 75 most of the way. I wouldn't have thought the tuned N54 would lose that much mpg.
Car looks great BTW, you're a lucky fuck to own a 1M and an M3! |
