Certainly didn't indicate that he new why it cant be referred to as an M1 from the video.

It can't be referred to as the M1 because BMW haven't called it the M1. I think his point is that for most people, the confusion over the long-winded name (1-series M Coupe, not 1M as we tend to call it, remember) outweighs any historical reverence. Of course, we aren't most people, so we respect the M1 name
