Skyline Drive 5/8

Hey guys, I'm trying to get some folks together for an ad hoc Skyline Drive run this Saturday. I've got a year-long pass and went several times already. If you haven't yet, you should definitely go. It's a lot of fun, and probably one of the best driving roads in DC.

PM me if your'e interested!

Yeah, I've got the route down. Basically, there are 2 options. We could meet up somewhere around DC (say Tyson's Corner) and take 66-W all the way out to Front Royal. From there, I've usually driven down to Big Meadows and back up.

Alternatively, we could take 66-W to 211 and hit Skyline halfway down the drive and drive south and come back up. Front Royal is a bit nicer since there are places to get fuel and food.

As for the weather...it looks ok to me.

PM me if you're still interested. I've a couple others who may come as well.

were you in the skyline run 3? take a look at the thread. we need to have a route, including meeting areas, slow and speedy roads etc.

Lets move this to the following week and make an official thread so we can get a lot of people to come. I'm definitely down, but I think it'd be more fun if we had a lot of cars.

Btw- how much does it cost to drive on the road?

Nope, I wasn't in the last Skyline run.I heard about it too late. Either way, I tend to prefer the more casual, less formal drives, with a smaller group of cars with more space to drive. I went with a friend of mine (who's got a MK6 GTI) on the last VW Skyline Cruise this past April. You definitely get the cool factor, but who really wants to follow behind 50 other cars? It's cool once in a while, but more often than not, I like to have more driving room on the road.

I'd like Saturday to be one of those "informal" Skyline runs. Basically, the plan is for folks to meet somewhere convenient (assuming everyone lives around NOVA) and head out to Front Royal on 66-W. Grab a quite bite to eat, fuel up at BP and hit the drive until Big Meadows. Then head back up to Front Royal. Once I get names of folks who are down, I'll coordinate more directly with specific logistics.

Yeah, it's $15, but some of us already have year-long passes which are $30 for unlimited drives.

Skyline Drive is just a single road so no route needed really. Skyline Drive is perfect for views and cruising at 45mph but you won't be enjoying power or cornering speed. The speed limit is strictly 35mph and enforced by a lot Park Rangers. That being said, you wont find a road with better views. If you've never driven it, you really need to.

I'm thinking about setting up the next Skyline Run in July.

Very true about the speed limit. You've got to be careful, but there are a few good sections to get around. In the three times I've gone this season, I've only seen a few park rangers.
