437 rwhp / 447 rwtq
Isn't this the "General BMW news and CARS discussion forum"?
The news of the BMW 335i making 437 rwhp and 447 rwtq is not only BMW news but also discussion of other cars. I posted this a few days ago in this forum thread, so why did it apparently get deleted from this forum? In any case a JB3 tuned 335i on 100 Octane with just catless DP's and DCI made those numbers. No meth, no nos, and on stock exhaust with 2nd cats still in. Also on the stock tiny turbos with a peak of 18.6 psi. This is exciting news for BMW enthusiasts, as it takes the N54 engine to the next level. It is still yet to be determined the strength of the N54 engine's parts and internals, but clearly this is a big step up from the previous 417-418 rwhp peaks. Larger turbos are now starting to be made and soon to be put on the 335i's. So I'm sure the next power level will be tested as well. It will be interesting to see if the N54 can sustain 420+ rwhp levels on a track or at least in daily driving with the occasional WOT runs. If so, I'm sure 450-460+ rwhp will be the next step with larger turbos making 20-21 psi boost. 11.5's are hopefully coming (very) soon for the 335i As it is 437 rwhp would EASILY get mid 11's but without a larger FMIC to keep the temps down the car will probably heat soak really fast. |

At what rpms are those peaks? And what's the power output at redline?

He tapered the power off sharply after the 5700 rpm peak however, not only to protect the engine but without an upgraded FMIC it would heat soak too quickly and possibly throw a code. The power dropped to 400 rwhp at 6000 rpms and 360 rwhp at redline. Adding a Code3 FMIC and a larger oil cooler would make it perform much better and stay cooler. He mentioned with those he feels he could hold close to 400 rwhp at redline. Drop an LSD on the 335i and with good DR's it's an easy mid 11's car. Probably at 122+ mph. As it stands, he probably wouldn't want to push that much power at the strip for that much time without the FMIC upgraded. But think he's going to do a run with around 420 rwhp peak soon and is still gunning for mid 11's at 120+ mph. |

That is crazy man! I'm with Donald on this. How long do you think its gonna last man? I'm all about modding cars but I always wonder about how far off are factory tolerances.

But like the old Supras, the Neon SRT-4's, the EVO's, etc. nobody knows until they push it. The N54 engine could easily be strong enough to hold 500 rwhp? Maybe 600 rwhp? Who knows. Look at B5 S4's. They can make 450+ AWHP and be monsters on 2.7 liters. Too bad the engines are unreliable. But nobody will know until the limits are tested. It's good we keep going up in 10-20 rwhp increments though. Next up, larger turbos. If a larger turbo set up easily makes 450 rwhp and no engine issues, then we're good to go. I'm sure the limit will come with the High Pressure Fuel pump anyway. But gotta say, if the N54 reliably supports 430+ rwhp with no issues after a bunch of high speed running, many people will feel better knowing they can tune their N54 engine to 400 rwhp without worry of reliability. Reality is, there are several people running around with 400+ rwhp as their daily drivers with no issues. Heck Shiv has 40k miles on his 335i basically all tuned miles with like 400+ dyno pulls, many drag strip runs, several magazine tests, and even a day of drifting on an airport runway with no issues. Seems to be one of the best tuning engines to come out in the past couple years. And to think, I was a bit worried when I was one of the first 20 people in the country to get a PROcede put on my first 335i and it only made 310-315 rwhp then! |

Then there is a case of that kid who blew his turbo and damaged the entire engine. Perhaps Shiv has a statistical outlier engine. Base on one tuner or few tuners ( no more than 10 sample points) in the industry to judge the entire population of N54 built by BMW is unreliable. What's the confidence interval on or variance that? Point is judging reliability of a car from few samples is dangerous. All it really does is quell your fears with false intuitions. Gotta have more facts for an stronger statement. Let the tuners and the first adopters take the hit.
