3M Stoneguard
For those of you who have gotten the 3M stoneguard on the front hood of your 1 series, is there anywhere else that you find wear and tear happening where you wish you put it or would consider putting it?

Bumper, hood (18"), fenders, headlights, rocker panels (up to the crease), door mirrors, A-pillars, front section of the roof, and top of the rear bumper where things going into / out of the trunk can scuff it.
Predictably, I've already got a small bullseye in the windshield and a small chip in the hood, about 10" or so further up from the 3M film -- shoulda done the entire hood.

I got the 3M Stoneguard. I have an AW Coral. The plastic is ok but I am not that crazy of the look now.
I got it on the hood, front bumper, and back of mirrors. I think the most important thing is matching the area of coverage depending on where you will be driving. Also after putting on the winters, I noticed the wheels are out a bit more than the summers, so more crap spatters behind front/back wheels on the car. I didn’t think of that in the summer when I got the plastic wrap. I could order the mud flaps but it’s damn cold and I don’t feel like putting them on as I don’t do enough bad road driving. So if you drive a lot, and areas where you know you are going to get chipped, get covered. If not...forget-about-it! I wish it was not so $$$$. Also be nice if there was a disposable kit that was cheap. Say you know you are going on a long trip, and you know you will be on gravel or roads that will possibly chip the car paint. So you spend 1/2 hour covering it with cheap sticky plastic that will be removed when you get home. Note: Not much you can do to protect the OEM window. I hear it’s also not very good. But I would rather hear that from a good installer who can talk about all the glass on the market and show me why it’s cheap. Anyone who has proof that the 1 has cheap glass, please post it. Truth is, the plastic does look like crap over time. To "clean" where the installer does a sh*t-job around certain edges is a pain. (I wished I knew that it was possible to get all the edged wrapped, saw one car in the summer like that.) What I hate most about this 3rd party plastic is it is more about the installer than the plastic (me thinks anyway). The only way you can get a good job is research and lots of questions. (or you already know where to get it done from your previous cars) I personally think the worse place to have it done is the dealer. For 2 big reasons....
So if you want lots of plastic covering your car, and want it to look really good, you got to find out who can do the job very well. EspressoBoy |

Thanks for the replies. There is a guy on the E90Post.com boards that apparently does a great job. They rave about him over there.

Behind the wheel wells. I put the 3M there instead after a few days of having my 135 when I noticed it was already starting to get peppered behind the front wheel wells (look closely and you'll probably see it as well). It was that or mud guards.

Suggestions on where to get this done in Ottawa? I pick up my 135i at the end of June. The dealer is offering something called Clear Shield. I think it's by Ziebart along with the Diamond Gloss and sound deadening undercoat. Not sure about the last two.
