Would you take your 1er to Tahoe?
I have reservations in Lake Tahoe right before Christmas, and hopefully it will be snowing by then. The roads might be clear (and maybe this question will be moot), but what would you do in a snow storm with a car that is lowered?

Do they salt the roads here? I thought that was only in other regions of the country...

no salt on the roads there. If you have summer tires then stay far away from snow. if you have the all-seasons you will need to bring chains. light snow you should be fine. heavier snow, park the 1-er and rent an AWD car.

I used to drive a very low car in snow, of course it was AWD, but if the roads are clear it shouldnt be a problem. The only thing is we cannot put chains on our cars so if it does start snowing you might be stuck.

Seeing as how my 135i will never even see rain, I will not drive it through the snow

no salt, just dirt if you care about your paint and dont want chips on it, then avoid taking the 1. I lived up there for years and bumpers would be pretty much chipped down to the primer

They use sand and as long as you wash it right away when you get back, including getting the underbody of the car sprayed, it will be fine.

Well, after checking prices for planes, trains, and car rentals, it probably worth just driving up. Either way it's going to be $600-700. If I get some rock chips, then maybe its time to get the performance bumper :roundel:

NO
Cal Trans will dump sand on the roads at speed. I was on Hwy 80 with everyone doing 50+ and Cal Trans is getting ready for it to freeze that night so they had a truck out in the traffic dumping sand on the road. My windshield was toast.

Used to go to tahoe in my brothers MGB, with chains of course,.
I dont like even taking my 1 out in the rain, let alone snow. Live in NY and dont think will take it out mostly because people here cant drive for sh#t in the snow. Do admit I did get the cold package with the pass thru on my 1er but dont think I can bear to take it into snow country. |

With a place in Reno, I make the trip frequently. Your best bet is to leave the bay area about 4 in the morning so there is very light traffic in the sierra. Sunrise at Donner Lake is a geat background shot for the 1 series. If the roads are sanded, I wouldn't use the 1'er, rent a car. Even with light snow, it's the other people (4WD Suburbans) you have to be worried about.
