Any portable USB drive should work fine if the interface is USB 2.0.
Just note that the BMW system tends to not like iTunes-derived formats (i.e. AAC), so you need to stick with mp3, wav, and aif.

When you first buy a hd, you can go into computer management and set the file management type, FAT32 or NTFS

Does the drive work without an external power supply. I have a 120Gb drive and needed to use an external power supply.

Be careful. I had one drive already die in my car, but that's in Alabama summer heat, so you might not have that issue. I switched to a 32gb thumb drive and it's still going strong.

Whatever you use, it must be Fat32, NOT NTSF formatted. Also, I believe that the manual advises against using a portable hard drive, although some do work. I have a 32 gb thumb drive which works great (BTW the car will also read WMA formatted songs, not just MP3's).

I am glad to see that it is working for the OP but I think that best bet, if not an ipod, is solid state memory. Thumb drives are getting very cheap and are also getting much larger. 32GB thumb drives are in the $80 range or cheaper. The problem with HDD's is you have to deal with power, heat, and shock. HDD's can be damaged from extreme heat and cold and are also very sensitive to vibrations. The positive part of HDD's is that they are cheap per GB. I have an I-pod in my 1er but I have a 32GB Thumb drive in my S2k. Both work great and I don't prefer one over the other in any way except that I can take the ipod out and use it as an actual ipod if I go work out or something like that.

^ i doubt it, thats a 5400 rpms drive. 5400 rpm drive generally consume too much power. Most people have been successful with 4200 rpm and slower drives.
