2008 with 2009 iDrive Upgrade -

Does anyone know if the new '09 Navigation DVD can be (upgraded)
and loaded into an '08 idrive?

i.e. - to display the better navigational graphics in our '08 1 series?

i doubt it, since the new system is a hardware upgrade as well as software.

The '09 system is hard drive based and has a higher res screen. So I doubt it's compatible with the '08 DVD based system.

i think the question was more about whether or not it would be relatively "easy" to retrofit it. Obviously there is gonna be HW and SW changes, but wiring, etc, should be the same.

I wish I would have known they were planning on upgrading iDrive

I would have gotten it on my 08 simply for the hope of getting it upgraded. Oh well, maybe on my girlfriend's 1er

Dealer said today it's not possible for the 08 to get the upgrade and not even sure the '09's will have the new navi.:iono:
He only confirmed the 7 series is getting the nav overhaul.

Def. not possible to get the topographic stuff on older hardware. The biggest differences to me appear to be the much higher resolution screen and aesthetic appeal, plus the extra hard buttons. It looks like an actual modern nav system. Oh well, my lease will be up shortly after this is released...
