Curious "Start/Stop" behavior

Try this:
  • Turn car off
  • Remove key fob
  • Hit Start/Stop button - engine fires
It fired up 3 times after removing the fob. Actually drove around w/o the key fob.

I don't think I like this behavior. I get the feeling some one could jump in the car after me and drive off.

I posted about this "trick" before. Once you open the door, it doesn't allow the car to start without the key.

So, it's possible for somebody to steal the car, if you climbed out the window, and the thief climbed back in the open window.

It does allow for paying the radio when the car is without a key though. I look at this as similar to older cars where you could turn the key away from the starting position and remove the key, and the radio would continue to play.

I guess I do not see the point of this feature. Why would I want to start the car w/o the key.

:iono: It's similar to older cars that allowed this behavior. At least it would be fairly impossible for it to allow your car to get stolen.

As we say in the software world: "It's a feature, not a bug".

Not certain I follow you here, Larry. How would older cars allow this? In older cars, if you remove the key from the key lock, you'd have to re-insert the key to start the car again. Also, in older cars if you remove the key, you lose Accessory power.

Why do you guys think I don't know if I have CA.

Not only do I not have it, I think it's a huge waste of money.

As many of you know from reading me lament about not being able to put my vert top down and up with my remote, I do not have CA.

However, I just tested this and it does work for me. Key in, start-stop, pull key out, push button, still can start. Weird!

I'm off to the airport as soon as the taxi shows up, so I can't test this more fully. But it does work with out CA.

I had some cars (GM & Ford) from the 70's and 80's, as well as my old 2003 Discovery, that allowed you to turn the key the opposite way from starting the car, and remove the key. The accessory power then remained on, and you did not need the key.

It's obviously not exactly the same, but it's similar.

Opening the door will deactivate the use of restarting the car without the fob inserted. I'm talking about non-CA cars, as e34m5 is too.

Yeah, I remember the reverse turn for accessory power. I didn't realize you could also remove the key in that position. Never tried it, honestly.

I just tried this myself also. It's weird. If all BMW wanted to accomplish was retain accessory power, it seems they could have done that w/o also letting the car be restarted.

It almost seems like it's a byproduct of Comfort Access. Like the logic for Comfort Access was to allow restarts if a door wasn't opened, saving the need to sense the keyfob (and potentially saving the battery in the fob in the process), but they left the logic in for non-CA cars also.

Well, possibly CA related, but to throw a monkey wrench in that theory... (as I do occasionally  )my 2006 e90 did this key-out-start thing, in a March 2005 production car, 6 months before CA was even orderable.
