Custom plates more likely to attract vandelism?
Do you have custom plates? I've considered having some plates just for fun to play off the 135i.
I'm afraid this could attract mischevious jealous types, resulting in vandelism. |

I've had customs for a long time (over 8 years), they're work related, but have never had a problem with them. The worst/best part is everyone knows where you are, then it just depends on whether you want people to know that or not

Whether you're vandalized may have at least as much to do with the car you drive as with its plate. MY '05 MCS had its hatch lid bashed with a blunt instrument, even though it has normal plates. Our Audi S4 Avant has a really strange plate (HPL 1X). No vandalism to date, but trouble re-entering the States from Canada nearly every time. Our border people want a full explanation, so I tell them. Until a few years ago, the official language of international rowing was French, in which the my plate is the abbreviation for "lightweight man in a single scull." The usual response is, "Sure. Now what game are we really playing here," followed by about five minutes of checking my documents against a computer search. They think the plate was faked the night before. In these days of nervous officialdom, it's better not to attract undue attention. Lesson learned. The 1er has a boringly normal plate.
Thucydides, the Greek historian, had a great motto. Literally rendered, it's "Escape notice as you live." Idiomatically, it's "Keep a low profile." An uncommon car, let alone one of a make that cops expect to be speeding, already violates the rule. A cutesy plate might just add another red flag. I'm avoiding vanity this time around.

I always love the people who have the model of their car on the licence plate. Or "My 135i". I always think, "No shit!" Never understand the custom plates thing.

It's just a custom thing ... some people like those plastic bits you can stick all over the car, some like tinted windows, some like modding their engine, some don't !! My plates always make me think "my car" !! If you don't like them you don't have to have them.

You're on a slippery slope of looking like a wanker with vanity plates. I suppose it could exacerbate the possibility of vandalism. Choose plate carefully; anything that could be construed as cocky or obnoxious is asking for it.

I won't get a personalised plate. I think that it makes the car much more memorable which can be a bad thing. For me personally if I see a really hot car with a personalised plate I always remember the plate it's an easy way to identify it. A lot of my friends say the same thing. "Have you seen that Evo 10 with the plate XXXXXX" etc.
I would rather not have strangers notice my car. |

I had a Subaru WRX wagon with custom plates that read WGNPWR, never had any problems with vandelism. I would however catch crap from people who didn't know it was modified (it was a sleeper) but they would tend to shut up when I opened the dump on my downpipe.
