Talking 2008 STI vs 2007 335i

A little magazine racin!!

2007 BMW 335i vs. 2008 Subaru STI
As per CarandDriver:
Both are the four dour 6speed manual versions

'08 STI '07 335i

Zero to 30mph 1.5 / 1.7
40mph 2.8 / 2.6
50mph 3.7 / 3.7
60mph 5.1 / 4.8
70mph 6.6 / 6.5
80mph 8.2 / 8.1
90mph 10.5 / 9.9
100mph 12.9 / 11.8
110mph 16.1 / 14.9

120mph 20.1 / 17.9
130mph n/a / 21.1
Standing quarter mile 13.6@102 / 13.5@106
Street start, 5-60mph 6.9sec 5.6sec
TopGear accel 30-50mph 12.3 6.5
TopGear accel 50-70mph 8.8 6.0

STI 335i
Braking from 70mph 159ft 157ft
Curb weight 3360lb 3616lb
Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad: 0.93 g(STI) 0.89 g(BMW)
BMW 335i
Power (SAE net): 300 bhp @ 5800 rpm
Torque (SAE net): 300 lb-ft @ 1400 rpm
SUBARU STI
Power (SAE net): 305 bhp @ 6000 rpm
Torque (SAE net):290 lb-ft @ 4000 rpm

My Take: It would really entertaining to see these cars race from a standstill!!! At the lower end of the spectrum its DEFINITELY a drivers race. Not so much when they both are moving. I cant wait to see our little 135i in action. It will put a BUS LENGTH on the new STI in top gear acceleration.

**The weather conditions were obviously different ofcourse but the STI test car had 1800miles on it. The temp outside was 63 degrees. My physical issue of C&D didnt have the temperature and mileage of the Bimmer.

Okay, so on a drag strip, the 335i pretty much takes the STi on just about every figure. When you're not going in a straight line, the STi would probably catch up, looking at skidpad figures. Slalom figures would have been nice too, and I'd bet that figure would be firmly in the STi's hand too, based on the skidpad numbers.

To tell you the truth though, I'm surprised the 335i does as well as it does with those figures. The 135i being smaller and more agile may very well equal or exceed the STi in the twisties, and best it in most of the above categories.

I think the big difference in terms of powertrains is BMW "claims" 300HP [even though dyno's prove it's more like 330HP], and the STI is barely scraping to get 300HP! After driving a 335xi recently, the last gen STI would cream it in anything resembling a corner. This new STI is supposed to be floppier, so it should only beat the Bimmer on the track, not cream it like the last gen.

Obviously these two cars are for very different demographics!

I'd take the 335i any of the week and twice on Sundays. But I am even happier there is a 135 as that is the perfect car for me.

50mph 3.7 / 3.7
60mph 5.1 / 4.8
70mph 6.6 / 6.5

This shows how 0-60 times don't always tell the whole story. They are evenly matched at 50 and 70, but .3 apart at 60. The only explaination that makes sense to me is the gearshift from 2nd to 3rd happens between 50-60 on the STI, and between 60-70 in the BMW. The 0-60 time alone makes the STI seem much slower, but in reality they both throw you back in the seat about the same amount.

Now that means the BMW has taller gearing so its faster either way. Give the the same gear ratio as the STI and you likely see it winning to 50 and above.

Nope not a typo. AWD suffers from serious drivetrain losses. These cars have totally different engines also.

It's top gear acceleration. Just down shift, problem solved.

Don't ask me how I know this, but from a roll on, a 335i auto will be even with a lightly modded '07 STI.

<- I'm torn.

I'm going to be using the car for autocross, and for that, the STI is probably better. The 135 is definitely faster on the street and classier though. Decisions decisions.

gearing, turbo lag(twin turbo vs. single and 10.2 vs. 8.2:1 compression ratio), and the extra displacement of the 335i could easily make that difference in a roll on situation. notice the 50-70 is much closer because the sti is getting in the boost. the N54 has ridiculous low end torque

edit: scratch the gearing the sti has the advantage there

Did anybody look at the picture of the STi in the first post and notice that its as hideous as Medusa?

I'd rather walk around with a big ass goiter on my neck than waste perfectly good money on an STi.

Looks better than the 135 hatch though

As far as looks, it's not beautiful but the STI's functionality makes me love it. Being able to fit 295 wide tires under the stock bodywork means a lot to me. I use my cars for autocross, and I just feel nervous going for the 135 if the STI is going to beat it around a track.

That has got to be the funniest thing I've heard in a long long time.
