BMW's New V-8 Twin Turbo

The new V8 engine with Twin Turbo technology and direct gasoline injection, is likewise making its world debut in the BMW X6. Displacing 4.4 liters, this eight-cylinder with maximum engine output of 400 hp and peak torque of 450 lb-ft available over an unusually large range of engine speed from 1,800–4,500 rpm, is the most powerful engine ever seen in a BMW X Model.

The new eight-cylinder is indeed truly impressive not only through its outstanding thrust and pulling force, but also through its compact dimensions. For this is the first eight-cylinder gasoline engine in the world to feature its turbocharger in the V-section between the two rows of cylinders.

That's a work of art. Unlike the 135i's turbos, those look like an easy swap.... top and center. This engine might be capable of unbelievable amounts of output with tuning. :wink:

Sort of like a Duramax diesel or Ford Powerstroke with the turbo(s) in the middle. Very compact design, I wonder which high perfomance model theyll put it in? 5 series? 7?

I remember the old Ford racing engines with the heads flopped like that to put the exhaust ports on the inside. I think Ferrari used that at some point also. Neat tech.

What I really like about this, in addition to looking cool as shit, is the minimal amount of piping required to get from one turbo back around to the intake side of things. I can't imagine it makes that much of an efficiency difference overall in a turbocharged system, but it just feels like a much more elegant solution than the rather circuitous routing required on the N54.

I really hope this engine gets into more cars than the X6. Even though I'm in the small minority that likes the X6 design, I highly doubt I'd ever buy one.

The 4.4L TT doesnt appear to use an air-air FMIC but rather two liquid-air SMICs. You can see the coolant line ports closed up. liquid-air ICs can cooler air much better, but once they get heat soaked they take much longer to cool down. I am a little suprised by the move actually but then again I was surpised by the 4.4L turbo itself and the turbos mounted in the V as well.

You could get a split crank V8 to act like a single plane crank when you used what was known as a '180 degree' header system.

:iono:Umm, only coolant lines I see are running in/out of the cylinder heads...the lexan model shows the pipes from the turbos feeding directly into the cylinders...
