Blasphemy: Considering painting the roof.
I'm considering painting the roof of an e92 M3 when it gets here (oct ?). I'm trying to find out if the e90 M3 sedan metal roof is the same conformation/size as the e92 M3 carbon fiber.
Plan would be remove the carbon fiber. Replace with painted metal roof. Replace cf when selling. I like the look of a no moonroof, painted roof. 6 series here for example only. Thoughts ? |

Why???
I agree, just buy the sedan (saloon) w/out the sunroof.

Roof
Already ordered the coupe. Will probably paint the cf roof if the metal one from the e90 doesn't fit. I like the idea of the carbon fiber (light and strong), just not the appearance. I'm on the older end of the bi-modal age distribution, so that's probably explains it.
Now if the entire car were carbon fiber, that would be tempting. |

I'm 43 and I love the CF look. I think it will grow on you. I recommend giving it some time before you have the roof painted, I think you'll like it.
Maybe you don't care, but I would think painting the roof will kill your resale value.

I know how you feel. I hate the current CF craze, and was very, very close to getting the Steel Roof w/ sunroof, but everyone I talked to at BMW said the CF looks great in person. Having got the car now it has grown on me. It is color dependent though. If you ordered the red I would ask about steel roof w/o sunroof. It actually looks good on all the other colors though, even Interlagos Blue.

Thanks
GregW, That helps. I thought I could just remove and replace. I'll stick with stock and it looks like SSII unless new colors available next MY.

If you want, paint over the CF, and when you sell you can have the paint sanded off and re-clear coated.
Or have a bodyshop spray some layers of clear on the carbon fiber, then paint body color over that, so that when you sand the paint off down the road, you'll have enough layers of clear to protect the carbon fiber.
