2010 M5  [10.00]
2016 BMW 340xi M Sport  [9.00]
2019 X5 50i M Sport  [5.50]
2010 535xi  [0.00]

Well - The Verdict Is In - E60 compared to E39!

Here is my spill on my seat time behind and 2010 E60 535xi Sport (just bought),...as compared to my previously owned E39s,...1999 540i Sport,...2002 530i Sport:

Build: Very similar - a Tie

Ego: E39 for simplicity - E60 for Evolution (I'm an iDrive nut)

Ingress / Egress: E60 all the way.

Engine: The E39 540's V8 was more Dr., Jerkle/Mr. Hyde,...once it hits 4k,...the power is quite Explosive,...so one had best be ready! ...with eyes wide-opened! The E39 530i power was similar to the E60 535,...as in very Linear,...very progressive! Everywhere the E39 530i has power,...the E60 535xi has more,...way more!

Tranny: All were auto-boxes,...and therefore all were very similar,....hot-butter-smooth to day the least!

Cornering: I've come to notice that the E60 535xi feels more like the E39 540i,....and the E39 530i feeling the most nimble!

Point and Shoot: E60 535xi Sport,...all the way! The fast, but linear build of the TST chargers power is quite rewarding for only a 300hp/300Tftlbs vehicle.

Highway Passing: The nod goes to the TST Charged E60!

Long Distance Roadtrips: The E60 would get the nod,..again!

Fuel Mileage: E60 - The City numbers are similar to the E39 530,....and are way ahead of the E39 540,...as I recall to always have to chase gas stations. The E39 530i was great on the Hwy,..around 30mpg,..I'm thinking the E60 535xi will be about the same,...at least based on how I drive.

So, that's it for now,...if I think of more,...I will update this post!

Your thoughts may differ,....cheers!

After I switched to an E60 530i Sport 6 speed from an E59 525i 5 speed, there is no comparison. E60 all the way on all accounts, including longevity versus nagging wearout items on teh E39. Also the nagging E39 bushing issues are either not a problem, or much less nagging, than the E39. M54 on the E60 is the 231hp final version and mapping, single piece thin rigid plastic intake boot that takes the MAF sensor directly without screens.
There's also quick 40 pounds to rip out of the E60 from the trunk liner panels and other useless plastic sound deadeners, versus the E39. Higher speed highway trips get 29+mpg with ac on and a few hundred pounds of cargo. At 100k miles, the OE shocks and struts are still damping nicely, even if softer than when new. No such luck on an E39, where the OE shocks and struts got lame by 50k. Rear air suspension on E39 is the exception, at 160k miles the original air shocks were still dampening great.
