Roads to drive
I thought it would be handy to have a thread to describe roads that are fun to drive and that are "worthy" of a BMW.
Before taking a road trip, I plug "motorcycle roads" into a search engine. Two of the sites that I have bookmarked are http://motorcycleroads.com/find_a_road.shtml (Best Motorcycle Roads in the USA) and http://www.motorcycleroads.us/ (MotorcycleRoads.US). Some of the roads are "destinations" -- worth the entire trip -- while others are nice side trips. If you like driving the interstates, Larry McMurtry has a nice book on that, Roads: Driving America's Great Highways. http://www.amazon.com/Roads-Driving-...6456358&sr=1-1 Forum mods: I don't think this thread fits in either the vehicle-class forums or in the regional forums, since the topic overlaps vehicle class and region. |

North Carolina: Tail of the Dragon
The "Tail of the Dragon" at Deals Gap, route 129 in western North Carolina into Tennessee, is a destination road -- worth the trip. It may be scenic, but if you look at the scenery for more than a moment you will be part of it. Its 318 turns in 11 miles have been well described in many other places:

Hwy 101 along the Oregon coast and Hwy 1 (PCH) along the California coast. Has been touted as on of the best driving highways on the West Coast.
I had fun driving down there in a minivan. Some day I'll go back with something more zippy. |
