Diesel Road Trip finds Diesel Nozzle issues

Took my 35d to Kentucky this past week. Stopped after 600 miles to refuel at an Exxon station in Mississippi, and found that they had used the standard gasoline nozzle for Diesel, and it couldn't be inserted into the filler neck. Tried two more Exxon's, all had the same issue [yep-I work for Exxon, and our local stations are all equipped with the proper nozzles]. Went to the Shell station and they had the proper size nozzle. My dealer had mentioned an accessory that could be used to adapt the smaller pump nozzle to the correct size at time of purchase. It is mentioned in the owner's manual, so I looked in all the cubbyholes and under the hatch in the back, but I did not have an adapter. A trip back to the dealer with my story post-vacation resulted in the parts guy locating the one adapter he carried in stock, which he generously gave me free of charge. He had never heard of the part before, but is ordering a few now that he has the part number. The adapter is a plastic slip-on nozzle that makes the gasoline nozzle size mimic the diesel nozzle size. It comes in a plastic cylinder with a surgeon's glove stuffed inside. Looks like a small tennis ball package. FYI-In case you ever need the adapter, might get one now and stick in a cubbyhole. It took my dealer's parts guy 30 minutes to locate the only one he had in stock.

The anti-misfueling gate in the vehicle's fuel filler neck is opened by both sides of the correct fueling nozzle hitting both detents on opposite sides of the filler opening at the same time. A too-small fueling nozzle is not able to do this, so the gate stays closed.

To pop the gate open when the diesel pump has the wrong nozzle, use the nozzle to press one of the detents, then use a slim device—screwdriver or pocket knife blade—to press the other detent and pop open the gate. Then continue to insert the nozzle and pump away.

You should have gotten the emergency adapter funnel - blue - with your car... free. Have you checked all through the cargo area for it?

Look for the adapter where the cargo net is hidden. That where mine was.

Next clue. The cargo net is in the left panel in the trunk space.

Diesel Fueling Adapter Pictures

Attached are pics of the BMW-supplied Fueling adapter package with parts numbers. The actual plastic adapter is the last picture below. My X-5 has the 3rd row seats, and did have the mesh Cargo-net stored under the rear panel upon purchase, but I did not have this adapter, nor the wheel lug-nut locks or rubber mat as some received. The dealer did supply the adapter free of charge, after I let the parts guy know I never received one. I bought the rubber cargo area mat for $125 at the dealer after I mentioned it was on sale on the BMW website, otherwise they wanted a few hundred for it. It is fine for $125, but that is as much as I would want to pay for it.

Or you could go mad and move to a country where all the diesal nozzles are the correct size and save all that plastic adapter hassle!

My 2016 X5d came with this exact kit as well.

Not sure I have a cargo net though. Where should it be?

The "hidden" compartment in the rear left side.
