New dme update?

I was told that bmw has been updating the dme which makes it not compatible with piggy backs ? And I was thinking maybe that's why my ess module keeps "locking" or shutting off?

If this updating is really in progress, there's going to be a lot of pissed off people and vendors very soon.

Probably hurt the most, as they are one of the larger tuner companies in the business.

Not sure how true this is but it's pretty simple to tell the dealer when going in for routine service to not do any updates.

I just got back from my 1200 mile break in service and my service advisor didn't say anything about this. He knows that I have the Dinan Stage 1 installed since I had my BMW dealer install it.

You can choose to not go in for services, and DIY or do an Indy, but if you do go into a BMW authorized service center, in some cases you won't have a choice, some DME updates are mandatory, as in the case of this one - if true, will be. I speak from experience with my previous 335i N54. I had many updates that were required, giving me no option in the matter. Even complaining to BMWNA did me no good.

Well if that's the case , you can refuse all services and leave right?
Unless you really needed some warranty work done, an oil change isn't that expensive

I had a fbo with meth 335i and always declined every update, went for service with every mod. Fully cat less tune, meth, fmic, coilovers etc. They never said one was mandatory. It's your car. They can NOT do an update if you tell them not to.

I just picked up my car from the dealership service department. I specifically asked about any DME updates and my service advisor denied that any were due nor had any been done. Hope that helps

Surely it couldn't stop a piggy back from working anyway? It changes sensor readings to up boost etc etc. So not sure they could put an update in place that could stop it as there has to be a certain amount of variable in the tuning to allow for different altitude and so on.

That was not my experience with BMWNA when they were having all the replacement troubles with failing HPFPs and mandatory software changes on the N54. You can look it up if interested, a lawsuit insued, etc, it made National news.

Yes, you don't have to go in for services, thus can avoid BMW altogether if you do a DIY or an Indy. But don't be surprised if you have a failure, and have to go in, that BMW might not cover you because you didn't update your DME software.

I have read somewhere, as strange as this sounds, BMW feels their DME software is proprietary, thus they can program it at will and take any steps they wish to keep you out of it. Which if tampered with and realized, they can void your warranty.

In the end, it's your car, you have the right to do nothing to it you don't want to...but BMW also has the right to void your warranty under certain conditions.

Sounds right, thus all the piggybacks on the market vs plug in flashes, eg Cobb, that have yet to crack the codes to self flash, without breaking into the DME which right now looks to be impossible. Though I still have hope Cobb comes to the rescue at some point down the road, no matter what they say.

Refusing to get required service performed by the dealer will probably result in warranty claims denied down the road. I wouldn't play with that.

I would recommend upgrading it with a JB4.

Can someone explain how a dme flash would stop a piggyback from working?

Guys, you need to calm down. If BMW issues a DME Recall software Update. It has NOTHING to do with stopping people from using piggybacks. A recall is a Federal mandated update which usually has to do with emissions when it is DME related. They are not going to come out with a recall and make you program your car so you cannot use a piggyback.
