Can I make cold start quieter?

I'm probably the only person on this forum that wants to make cold start quieter, but I literally woke up people in my house inching out of the garage. Is there any way to quieten it down?

I believe you need to deactivate the cold start feature... only can be done by using a tune/piggyback if I understand correctly. That also means warranty issues so likely not worth the risk if it is just to quiet cold start.

P.S. You aren't alone on this. My wife complains about it all of the time too. It is loud and raspy (not a nice startup sound by any stretch) and I also wake up people in the house when I leave early in the AM. This is one of my few pet peeves with the car but, unfortunately, no easy resolution.

+1 I do that sometimes and then rev it to see birds within a 2 mile radius take off in synch!

The only way is keep your valve closed at cold start. Cold starts open the turbo waste gates, makes the fuel richer, and increase RPM to warm up the cat converters. It's programmed at the ECU level and cannot be coded or bypassed.

You need to code it out or use a valve module like the BMS Can Flap Module to close the valves.

You can also roll your car out of the garage in neutral LOL

It's loud even with the valves closed in my experience during cold start. It is REALLY loud with the valves open... like shake your house loud. All comments relate to a cold, cold start. Like first thing in the AM when the ambient temp is cold. Any other startup is quiet.

As noted above, I don't find closing the exhaust valves make much difference. I think you need to stop the car from going into the cold start cycle that you described. Even when I closed my valves, it was still very loud on cold morning start up. Is your experience different? I ask because maybe my valves weren't closing (when I thought they were) and this would actually make a difference where my previous experience would suggest it didn't.

To quiet our loud bikes we put fine steel wool pads in the exhaust tips. Worked great and once you rev'd it out hard it would blow them out from the exhaust. Ha. Not a long term fix but it works.

this is one of my bigger worries ordering the car... I leave really early in the morning, really don't want to wake the kids up.

Get a 3/4 series?

Delete the whole exhaust for a week or few.....then go back to stock. Everyone will think the noise is more reasonable!

Mine seemed pretty quiet. Stock exhaust. When I have the valve mod done, it was a different story. I did asked my neighbor if they noticed loud exhaust sound in the morning when I had the mod, they said no. I think you guys are over thinking it. You're fine.

Tell my wife that

I don't think it's loud at all. It's more an issue with my son who sleeps above the garage and me leaving sometimes at 6:00AM. It always wakes him.

Regardless, it's not a big deal but for some people (even if they love a loud exhaust once they are out of the neighborhood), the cold start can be annoying... it also sounds crappy anyway

I don't find it loud at all at cold start especially w/ the factory exhaust. After unplugging my valves and putting on the performance exhaust NOW it rumbles and wakes up the neighbors. But I haven't had a complaint yet; just a mentioning that I've woken them lol.

I think that is a "polite" complaint If the neighbor didn't care, they wouldn't have mentioned it at all If they mentioned it, it is because they hope it doesn't happen again but don't want to create friction.

Lol. Tell your wife that successful people wake up early, so you're training the son. Just kidding.

My nephews would probably sleep through a tornado if no one wakes them up. I think the market just presented an opportunity for vendors to go figure out. Maybe a 3 stage exhaust? (Soft, medium, loud). Or electronic modules to fool the ECU command.

Only way to delete cold start is to re-program the ecu which isnt much option for majority of people. I have JB4 , DP, and valveless meisterschaft GT2 exhaust.... its LOUD

Here's the technique i use to start car in an HOA neighborhood and not get kicked out lol.

i have 6MT but this should work for DCT also.

* Put car in 1st gear / Neutral if you have DCT
* release hand brake
* start car and immediately press the ac off button at the same time slowly accelerating out of the parking spot at 2k RPM then gradually release the gas and hold RPM at 1,500.
* this method will override the 3k RPM cold start because car is in gear
* Once i make it down the street away from all the neighbors, i put car in neutral and let it warm up and off i go. (until it shows 3 lit bars on the tac instead of 4 or 5)

its been working for me for a couple months now with the Meisterschaft GT2
