JB4 problems/dealer visits

JB4 owners.

I want to joint the jb4 family but I have some concerns and would like your inputs.

1) have you had any problems with the tune and how long have you had it

2) can you get by dealer visits without voiding warranty (also if you had a problem with jb4 what did you do)

Appreciate your help guys!!

This topic has been exhaustively been covered and discussed. Just search this forum and you will find a wealth of feedback and info on the topic. As long as you remove the tune prior to any dealer visit you should be ok. There is obviously a risk involved whenever tuning an engine outside of factory specs, but that said, BMS has one of the best track records of reliable piggyback tuning out there.

While I don't have my F80 yet, I have a BMS tune on my 750i. I had an issue early on with the car not adapting properly. Mentioned it to BMS and they sent me a new tune no questions asked. Good people.

I've had my BMS Stage 1 tune for about 1000 miles now with no issues. Car is running really strong. I think the key is making sure the ECU adapts to the increase boost and not pounding the throttle on day 1. Being plug and play makes it perfect before bring your ride in for service. Just unplug before you do. Good luck!

This has been covered a lot, but basically if you remove before visit you are okay. Lots of guys go in with their tunes on for routine maintenance, etc. All depends on dealer, etc.

What if you have DPs and the CEL comes on when you visit the dealer with JB4 unplugged (JB4 suppress the CEL from having DPs)?

I think the bigger turbo was the issue there. OP, if you go on for regular service with dp and jb4 on the vehicle and the dealer tells you they have voided the warranty even though nothing is wrong, find a new dealership to get serviced at.
Most normal dealers won't say anything unless you are trying to claim warranty work.

It was a major combination of possibilities, ultimately as previously stated it really all depends on the dealer you service your vehicle with. With a lot of modified and tuned cars here in socal, a lot more dealerships are aware and becoming more strict with that type of demographic of vehicles.

Having had many cars overs the years with varying levels of modifications (and unfortunately a few problems caused by the modifications in that time)...I can tell you that dealers that seem "mod friendly" change their tune once a serious issue comes up. No one should fool themselves into thinking otherwise. Accept the risk or don't mod. I for one still choose to mod, but I do so with eyes wide open.

That's precisely it, most aftermarket parts have disclaimers stating "for off road or racing purposes only" which for most people know that when racing a vehicle comes a lot of risk... Naturally it should come with the territory, literally have to pay to play but most consumers have a difficult time understanding that...

That is an N20 with upgraded turbo and heavily modded (not sure why he didn't start with an N55 to begin with, but everyone has their circumstances). I haven't seen or heard any N54/N55 with just JB4 + DPs that blew up.

Besides, if I mod my car that heavily I would accept the risk for the reward. The N54 can handle 900whp+ with stock internals (there's one in KC), the S55 is stronger than the N54 so it'll easily hold 550whp.

The odd of an S55 blowing up with just JB4 and DPs is next to none. I spoke to an SA locally, they're not going to just "void" my car's entire warranty just because I bring in a car with JB4 and DPs. They said don't waste my time removing JB4 before my service because they will know from the DME reports (higher boost logs). Only when it becomes an issue with the engine/turbo is where they will split the hair. Charge pipes blowing out and plugs fouling out would be on me.

With that, I'm still on the fence but leaning towards the JB4 + DPs option still.

Agreed.

20 psi on larger turbo != 20 psi on stock turbo

It doesn't make any sense to upgrade a turbo and run a tune designed for a stock turbo. That's a recipe for disaster.

Read the last page, it's just food for thought.

Play at your own risk, but there is no reason to fear monger. There are hundreds of JB F8X cars that have no issues at all. Some of these guys are running upwards of 550+RWHP with no issues.

However, there was a guy on here who did a money shift on a stock car and it blew up.

Don't be so anecdotal.

So much fail in that thread and people talking about things they don't fully understand. I.e. 100 octane being detrimental to the engine. Hahahabahabaha.

To the OP, it is VERY doubtful you'll have an issue with running a JB4 at elevated boost levels, much less slightly over stock. The S55 is a TOTALLY different engine than the N20 and is built much stronger than even the N54/N55.
