Career complaints...

I am a member of a few car forums but this one seems to be(by far) the most mature which is why I am posting this here.

I have worked for my current company for 8 years and I am rather burnt out. It's painfully unchallenging and uninspiring. The problem is I am good at it and make pretty decent money.

Good:
-40-45 hours a week.
-Pay
-Almost 5 paid weeks off yearly
-Good benefits

The bad:
-It's retail so poor work life balance for only working 40 hr weeks
-its retail
-the next step up is a pay cut of 10-12k
-pay has been declining. Peaked a few years back at about 80k, I will barley hit 70k this year.

I don't expect my career to be thrilling and exciting year round but there has to be better and I am willing to take a bit of a pay cut to be happier.

I have started to look for other sales jobs but seems to be a difficult area to get truth in. I have a general lack of trust in recruiters or hiring managers in commission jobs. They always seem to think you can make more than what's realistic.

I am probably gonna start moving up to management because I need a change and it will add to my resume.

I guess this is more of a bitch session but if anyone has any decent advice or experience on sales jobs that don't require me to work 70 hours a week that could help. I plan on putting my resume the generic job search sites to see what comes of it.

tl,dr whining about my job and need some motivation to grow some balls and move on.

Also, I know you will ask, I work in wireless sales.

40-45 hours a week?

...I would kill for that.

Only 40-45hr/week?
5weeks of paid vacation?
$70k-80k/yr?
Good benefit?

I would like to take your job for 65k/yr.
See the point?

One advice I can give you. Make sure grass is greener on the other side, before you move to the other side.

BTW, which one? (if I may ask)

You're like me. This biggest thing I hate about my job is that it pays too well. If it didn't, I'd be out of there in a heartbeat doing something that I enjoy doing or doesn't completely wear me out after 13 hours of work.

It's obvious you don't like sales. Time to look elsewhere, but be ready for a pay cut.

I don't mind sales. It's just doing high volume sales has taken its toll.

As to what company I'd rather not say. Although it wouldn't be too hard to guess.

And it's funny how I can't just shut my brain up and enjoy what I have. I kind of wish they would pay us less so it would be easier to move on.

It's easy. Wake up at 4am, go to work. Get home around 7pm. Eat some crackers and cheese, have a beer, look at a forum or two, go to bed. Repeat.

I'm 36, out of shape, blood pressure issues, grey hair, sometimes I can't remember what day of the week it is.....

...but my 401k is rockin'

Reminds me of my mid 20s.
I think I actually have more hair now than when I was in 20s.

PROS:
- Maybe 35 hours a week ....... seriously
- Come and go as I please
- Have reasonable amount of decision making power
- Less than 10 minute commute
- Benefits
- Job for life unless I am absolutely stupid
- Six figure salary but nothing crazy high

CONS:
- Would like more decision making power, we seem to spin our wheels on issues I'd be more decisive about
- I think i can make about 15 to 20% more elsewhere but yeah would be longer hours for sure

I work for a US subsidiary of a Canadian IT service provider.
-six figure salary
-40-50hr weeks (I get in by 10am)
-occasional weekends/on-call
-flex and comp time
-commute reimbursement
-3 weeks vacation
-unlimited sick time
-great stock purchase plan
-below average 401k match

Good jobs do exist, but there will always be better.

I have thought about getting some certifications for IT and my company will pay for it but I wouldn't get a job at my company unless I'm willing to move. Our IT is tough to get in. Also starting IT pay would be much less than I make now.

^do you have a degree in IT?

OP Don't feel so bad. When I got laid off from my job 1/09 I worked as a pizza delivery guy for four (4) years because I couldn't find a job in my field. I did manage to rake in $52K/yr, however, I was the sucker who delivered in a E39 M5 for all that time

I did get my Master's paid for in full by a previous employer - an underutilized benefit of working for a large company.

Pros:
-Over 100k comp
-5 minutes from home
-30-35 hrs/week face time
-15-20 hrs of actual work per week
-come and go whenever
-4 weeks vacation
-no set time to leave/come in
-good 401k match
-good employee stock purchase plann
-good, not great options package
-zero overtime
-zero weekend/night work/never take work home

Cons:
-With my education, I should be making much more, but I have no motivation.
-spend most of my time trading stocks instead of working, maybe a pro, but terrible for my career.
-average benefits
-unfulfilling work
-too many dumb people
-it's corporate

That's a plus at mine. They pay upfront for any schooling that would match a career inside the company, which includes about everything. I need to finish at least a basic degree I just fee so short on time with the unsteady schedule and commute.
