Why on Earth does the A/C turn on every time I start the Car

As the title states - my ac is turning on every time I start the car...even if I hit the off button prior to shutting the car down.

This, in my opinion, is complete stupidity - and I live in South Florida! I have always powered off the AC before shutting any of my cars down. A cold motor trying to crank and turn a compressor on just doesn't seem wise for longevity - it just forces things to work harder, right?

Am I doing something wrong, or I am not getting the point of why BMW did this?

You need to actually click the AC button before turning off the car. The climate control always comes back on, but the AC won't if you turn that off individually.

Honestly, the little bit of paristic drag from the A/C compressor at idle is nothing to an engine and won't cause any premature wear.

I wouldn't give it anymore thought. Have fun and stay "cool"!

Supposable the Kool Aid they are feeding the genius over here is this. The HVAC system cycles on at start up because over the years of non-operating systems there seems to be a stale unpleasant smell that will form in internals of the system. So to counteract that they make it cycle on every time you start the car. I do believe it because it does happen in my e46, that smell they are referring to.

I do hate it also and you can get it coded out.

This is my experience also.

My AC light does NOT turn on when I start the car if it was off when I turned off the car.

No coding done.

If you have it on auto, then it will need the compressor to keep the cabin at the desired temperature. If it's the winter obviously it won't need it and the compressor wont be on... The summer obviously it will.

Personally I would never not use the auto function. Just set the desired temp and let it go

I coded this yesterday. It's so nice that the air doesn't turn on when I turn on the engine, especially spring weather.
