MPE too much rasp after 1 week
I had the M Performance installed just over a week ago. The first couple of days I though it was the best thing in the world! Really loved it in both Efficient and Sports modes. Sounded much deeper. No drone at all. In Sports lots of burble and bursts on shifts etc.
However, now after one week the sound changed a lot. Under 4k rpm it still sounds fine in all modes, however after 4k it started sounding terrible. Even in efficient setting it delivers so much rattling rasp that I don't dare to rev the engine anymore. Reminds me of my straight pipe Honda VTEC engine back in my teens. Definitely not good. Anyone had similar issues? Is this a part of the "break-in" process for the MPE? P.S. Cold start of course is also a nightmare (with some of the dame rattling raspy sound), however I learned that if you drive off quickly it settles down in under a minute. However I am rapidly losing popularity in the neighborhood. |

Did you check if a fitting has gotten loose? Maybe it only an installation problem. My MPE kept sounding better as time went by, and no disturbing rasp or rattle for me.

Does the horrible rattle sound worse, after driving, for e.g. 30+ miles. As you slow down or stop u can hear a slight rattle?
Even reversing it into a carpark? If so, this can be resolved via having it double checked by the ppl who fitted 'em.

Adjusted means tightened? I would rather simply tighten it myself than bring the car to the dealer, takes me too much time. |

No, as I said, when idling (after warmup of course) or slow rev cruising there is nothing particular. I find it quite pleasant. |

You bought a car w bmw i-6.. Its character is to make raspy sound. No exhaust is going to completly change that. No idea why so many hate the raspy sound.. I personally though e46 i-6 raspy sound was one of best sounding engine out there.

Also retightened tips, and when doing CF rear diffuser, tightened the heat shield a bit. Very occassional rattle only when cold. Even the rasp has settled out a bit now that exhaust is burning out. It should get even better over time. I'm 1,400 miles into the MPE. Stick with it after having it checked out first. |

My MPE is raspy as hell. There are no rattles but its raspy! My F80 really reminds me of an E46 M3 with an aftermarket exhaust (no rasp-x pipe or anything). It is super raspy when accelerating above 2500 rpm when cold. When the exhaust is hot, I like the sound but it is still very raspy to me.
Ive decided this exhaust sounds like listening to a fist fight between 2 trombones, an e46 m3, a honda civic with aftermarket exhaust, and a ferrari 360...... |

For the avoidance of doubt, I like rasp in general. For the last 12 years I had i6 BMWs.
I checked all the fittings and connections on the exhaust itself, everything is super tight. However I located the source of rattle: there is a problem with one of the screws holding the carbon diffuser in the middle. The screw itself is very tight, holding together the diffuser and the white plastic trim underneath with the metal clip over it. However the metal heat shield that is supposed to be held by the same screw is loose, because the hole is larger than the screw. : I installed the diffuser myself so can't really file any complaints to anyone. However it is a mystery to me how it was held in place originally. I will figure something out. My idea is to take the metal clip off the plastic part and fit it over the heat shield and then screw it all together. |
