Arrow Considering Purchasing A Jaguar XKR Convertible Over E46 M3 Convertible Yay or Nay ?

Well Im looking to purchase me a convertible right now since it is winter time and prices tend to be much cheaper in the winter. So Im only looking to spend under 22K and I came up with 2 choices for a reasonable used performance car. Either a 01-02 Jaguar XKR Convertible with 40K-60k Miles Or A E46 01-02 M3 Convertible with 40K-60k Miles. I seen a couple XKRs for 18-21K and e46 M3 Convertibles for alot more money actually for 22K-25K. I love both cars but the Jaguar XKR Convertible looks stunning and more cheaper plus has dvd navi and supercharged and rare so Im opting for this instead. Am I wrong ? Help me choose.

Here was a 2001 sold for cheap

The Jag is stunning and has almost 400hp and has some Aston Martin styling to it. Im going to be making a purchase this week of one of these cars.

whenever I see a jaguar on this post i can not help but think of that guy who wanted to show off his jaguar s-type R. I would get the BMW, quicker (i'm pretty sure of that), better resale value, and it's more fun to drive.

Im leaning towards the Jag its beautiful and fast. You dont see XKRs on the road but you do see e46 M3s everywhere. I test driven both of them and Im convinced the Jag is nicer. Well if Im not mistaken I believe that Jaguar reliability is top notch by the JD Powers in terms of reliability over BMW. So I guess they are reliable. Either way I am purchasing one of these cars this week.

I really don't like Jags, even the new XF. Search for 'XF' to see my views on it when I saw one at my dealer.

Aside from the XJ220 the old XK is, in my opinion, the nicest looking Jaguar they've made in recent years. The new XK is too bug-eyed, and the new XF concept looked amazing but was ruined. Still, in terms of fun-to-drive, M3 would be your better bet.

At first I really liked the XF but now I think I need to see it in real-life. The headlights seems a little weird and need tweaked a little, I'm also not 100% about the grille. The rest of the bodywork and interior is amazing but as I said I'd like to see it in real-life before I say anything else...

Post this in the Jaguar forum. If they tell you to get the M3 too then its a consensus. Tough to get an objective opinion here when you say M3 vs. Jaguar.

The jag is definitely better looking, more mature, more comfortable, stands out more and is classier.

On the other hand, I think the M3 will be more fun to drive.

If you're looking for a comfy, goodlooking cruiser get the jag, its fast too, but if you really care about the drive then get the M3.

I don't know much about jag reliability, so I advise you to search extensively on that, go on some jag forums and ask people who have had the same car since 01 how there jag has been holding up and what the service is like.

Sounds like you already made your choice tho. You'll be really happy with both (but I think from what you've said, you'll be happier with the jag)

If you testdrove the XKR and liked it more, than you already answered your own question.

Personally id chose the M3. But it sounds like your more interested in the Jag. Also remember that M cars keep there value better than Jags. jaguars have horrible resale value.

Go with the BMW.

But if you only want to spend $22k, I'd suggest a low mileage E36 M3 vert or a regular E46 3er vert. Early model E46 M3s have a few issues, and maintaining an M car is more then, well... more then a lot of other cars.

What about a Z4?
Last winter my dad picked up a CPO 2003 Z4 roadster for $23k, with 18,000 miles on it.

If it was a new Jag then I would say go with the Jag...but if used go with the M3. Jag really didnt have there shite together back then.

Trust me, you'll be thoroughly dissapointed. The concept was great looking in my opinion, but the production car looks like it was beat with an ugly stick. The overall design isn't that bad; good proportions for a 4 seater, aggressive front, inoffensive rear, modern interior...but it just felt wrong. The headlights (both the housing and the details), the window trim, the taillights (too red...think pre-facelift current MB SL), the way the doors close, the interior build quality...I could go on and on. It's a shame too. I really want Jag to continue on.

Let me find my post and you'll see how dissapointed I am.

Here we go. This is how dissapointed I am, based off of my experience from the dealer:

Anyways, where to begin. I'll start with the quality, or lack thereof...

So I walk into the dealership showroom, and the first thing I see is the new XF front and center. According to the CA it's the first (and for the time being the only) one over in the states. Cool, I guess. So I'm standing back and having a look at the car's profile. It's sleek, sporty, and it has just the right amount of aggression and classiness. The front is the high point of the exterior design. Apart from the Chrysler headlights, the overall impression I got was that you don't want this thing in your rearview mirror cause it really does look angry. I think the hood helps a lot.

After I'm done looking at it from afar, I start walking up closer...this is where things get ugly. The paint is second rate; very dull and boring looking to say the least. It was that light sky blue-ish color that you see on a lot of Jags. It doesn't help this one at all. The window trim had ugly black filler strips between the windows and the body. The panel gaps weren't up to par with the competition. The taillights were a bit of a dissapointment. Design-wise they're executed very well (what with the Aston influences and all); Quality-wise, nuh-uh. No good. The materials or whatever the lights are housed in look like something that was on cars back in 2002. Very few LED's if any. Think of the pre-facelift, current-gen SL's - the ones that had the all red taillights. The headlights were fine. The wheels were good looking from a distance, quite big actually, but up close the finish was trashy. The silver paint wasn't very evenly distributed.

So I decide to take a look inside. Before I even step inside I get hit hard by something very dissapointing: the doors. Opening these things makes you feel like you're gonna tear them off their hinges. The noise that they made was worrysome as well. After opening and closing them a few more times I make my way inside.

First thing I notice is that the overall design is really well thought out. No serious flaws in any way, and the leather felt nice and smooth. A cool thing I noticed is that the air vents were concealed in the dash. The steering wheel was nice, but button placement on the 9 and 3 felt a bit far to reach with my fingers, and I have large hands. So those are the good things, now onto the bad...

Pretty much everything else sucked. Seriously, everything. The details are what seem to kill this car. The buttons felt horrible...I mean horrible. They creaked when you pushed them, and they lacked any real click to them. I couldn't tell if I pushed them in all the way. The finish on the materials was below par. The wood laquer looked like it had orange peel akin to that of our cars'. The aluminum all had major scratches, especially the roatary knob drive selector thing. The bins felt like they were made of the flimsiest, lightest plastic possible, and the hinges connected to them were equally horrid.

I'm seriously dissapointed with this car. I really wanted it to be good. It just isn't.
