Nice to see a moment's focus on an old school model. Good story on a cool car. A lone star Bmw CCA member in Texas imported three of them. Green, red and purple and had them for many years and has sold off one or two in the last decade.

Not officially. A few car have ended up in the states thru private importation. The Z1 was was built from March 1989–June 1991. About 8,000 units were made. Only six colors were offered. You can see the six colors on this door I filmed at he Essen Motor Show a few years back. You can drive the Z1 with the doors up or down! Here is how the doors work...

Did he say the 1980 Frankfurt show? I don't think it was shown there until 1987.
It's not the most attractive car they've built, but it's certainly unique. Weren't the panels all made of plastic?

Me and a friend, who's niece worked at BMW back in 1990 played around extensively in a Z1 that was in the back yard of that dealership.
Remembering it now, I'm amazed they let two young kids play around and in that car without anyone checking on us. I don't even recall how many times we pressed the door up/down button. I guess it was a not a classic car yet back then.

"Back to the future. 25 years of the BMW Z1 It was a true quantum leap: when BMW unveiled the Z1 to the international motoring press in the Italian town of Punta Ala back in autumn 1988..." "BMW’s historic 1987 Frankfurt Motor Show: first V12, first 3 Series Touring, first Z Roadster. When the show finally opened its doors on 11 September, visitors descended on the BMW stand in their hoards to behold a unique collection of firsts all set to go down in motoring history: the 750i powered by Germany’s first post-war 12-cylinder engine was marking its world premiere, as was the first ever 3 Series Touring as it blazed a trail for a whole new breed of car, and, of course, the avant-garde Z1, the first BMW roadster for around 30 years. Set off to stunning effect by a wall of water as a backdrop, a German news magazine deemed it “probably the most photographed vehicle at the entire show”. " |
