Road bikes?

Does anyone here know anything about road bikes?? Is this brand suppose to be good at all, I don't want to spend a lot, and i'm obviously a beginner. Any advice would be nice thanks.

My advice to you would be to go to a shop and properly get fitted for a bike....

I actually just went through the process myself and I've got a new bike that should be here at the end of the week. Like you, this will be my first "real" road bike, but one thing is certain, for riding distance you need something that is set up correctly or you'll end up hurting yourself.

Unfortunatly it isn't like buying a mountain bike... everything on a road bike can be tweaked for perfect geometry, etc.

I see you are in illinois, but I don't think you are in the Chicago area... if you are/aren't that far I can recommend the place I'm going through for my new bike. Totally awesome experience.

Also, I'm not familiar with that brand of bike, so I can't say good/bad about it. I will say that the components are very so so and for that money (even less in some cases) there are several options from more well known brands available. Trek/Specialized/Cannondale/Orbea/Scott/Jamis/Kona, etc.

Not familiar with that brand at all. For very similar money I bought a Trek from a local bike shop, where they did all the fitting and fine tuning for me. My bike also has better component spec then that.

Keep shopping.

This is definitely not as good of a deal as it looks. You can find that bike anywhere online for that price. I haven't looked into it, but it's probably a clearance.

If you think you're getting a hell of a deal based on components and wheelset, you always need to ask questions about the frame. The lower price comes from somewhere.

The frame welds look pretty good to me, but I'm not pro. The frame also looks a bit anemic to me as well. I might question it's strength.

Your next step is to seek answers about the frame. It is a very important factor that is often overlooked.

Feyd brings up a good point above, you really should get fitted.

I just bought an entry level Giant Defy road bike. I'd highly recommend going to a LBS and getting fitted properly, as others have mentioned. Where at in IL are you located. I had good experience at a shop just outside of Chicago.

I ride a Felt F2. i got it last year when they change models and save a bunch. Prob way to much bike for me but hey thats just how i role! haha

Thanks everyone for the info, I know absolutely nothing about bikes, I just would like a good starter bike thats good quality. I live about 3 hours west of Chicago, about 10 minutes from Iowa. Im not ever sure if there's any local bike shops around here, I will have to do a little researching.

My GOD! F2's are like $5000! Wish I had that kind of money for a bike lol. (hook me up

Generally how fast can a decent road bike get on a straight road?

That depends... but reasonable pace on lots of races are in the 20-25mph range (upper tier riders).

Downhills can get crazy fast.. 45mph+ And at that speed, with litterally two square inches of contact patch you'll have wanted to spend $5gs on a bike... LOL.

Just checked my GPS, I am a recreational rider at best, and on level ground it looks like I cruise between 18 and 21 mph, I consider that a sustainable pace. I am sure any new rider would have similar results.

Thats not bad, I remember when I was around 10 I got up to 21mph and I thought that was sooo cool

i was able to get it half price last year when they new 2010's came out. so wasn't that bad. its a sick bike.

We should turn this into a cycling thread...I just bought a Garmin 500 w/ cadence and HRM. It'll be nice to have all my workouts recorded automatically instead of having to plot them out manually in something like mapmyride.

you won't be able to get a new bike for that, entry level bikes start out at $900 to $1000. You should be able to find a pretty decent used (maybe vintage) bike for that price point though. Check craigslist and post on this site if you want opinions on a particular bike:

I use a garmin 305, the HRM and cadence monitor keep you from getting lazy, strongly recommend having a computer that handles those two things.
