how do you get involved in tracking bmw's?

hey guys, i would like to be able to go on a racetrack/closed course and driving. it seems like it would be an interesting experience. my problem is i have no clue how to get started.

are there events where you can just show up and drive on a racetrack? how about short introductory events where an instructor takes you around a couple times and gives you some tips. it doesn't even have to be a bmw only event, at this point, i would be happy to be able to get onto any track event and just try something new.

do you guys have any pointers or suggestions?

Check out your local BMW Car Club Chapter. Many clubs sponser autox weekends, car control clinics, driver schools....... Get involved with the club, you'll find there are many who track their cars and can offer good advice. IIRC membership in the BMWCCA is $40.00 a year and is money well spent (also includes the club magazine).

+1, BMW CCA is the way to go. That's how I got started and I've been doing driver's schools for 12 years. All you need is a membership, a driver's license, and a Snell approved motorcycle or car helmet. Check out BMWCCA.org.

BTW, real racing is much more involved and most if not all race sanctioning bodies require a full roll cage installed in your car plus a lot more safety equipment.

Fire away with any questions.

Here are some videos from BMWCCA driver's schools.

CCA is good, but you can always look for local performance driving schools at your nearest circuit. i've done both and they and each have their advantages and disadvantages. either way you do it, don't let the rookie nerves get to you...go out and tear shit up! you'll have a blast and be hooked immediately.
