HDMI (quick response please!!)
I need to order today. 10ft. should be sufficient length.
www.monoprice.com Whats the difference between 24AWG and 28AWG? I need 3 HDMI cables and I think 1 optical(for transfering sound from my receiver to the TV, receiver doesn't transfer sound via HDMI, read my other thread) I won't use this often but I decided it would be nice to have the option to use the TV speakers if necessary. Anyways, just send me the link of what I should get.

lower AWG means thicker cable.
Unless you are running it behind walls, the thickness doesn't matter. Get the cheaper one.

I plan on redoing the room in the next 6/mos. Wood paneling to drywall and at that point wiring may be moved to behind the wall. Should I really consider that now, or just look at it as having extra HDMI cables around in the future. Always seem to be a good thing with USB, prolly will be the same with HDMI eventually.

I just ordered the 6ft. 28awg. I figure it's good enough for now and when the time comes and if I need to upgrade then I do so and then I'll just have some extras.
Thanks for the help.

Seriously, it's not 2000 and we're talking a real digital signal here. One of the greatest bonuses of HDMI is that its not old school component style analog signal. You'd need to have best buy in your home to get any noticeable interference on an HDMI cable. Buy the cheapest one you can find.
You should buy a thicker optical cord if you're going to be running it through walls though, crimping it would be a bummer. But it's extremely surprising your receiver won't do sound via hdmi. You have a link to the "thread"? And on another note, if you're transfering sound from your receiver to your tv, you don't really need an optical cable. Your standard red black/white cables will work. Your tv isn't going to be better than regular old stereo sound. There's no real advantage to having an optical cord sending dolby digital 7.1 coded sound to a tv that's only going to understand "stereo left and stereo right".

So you're saying your receiver doesn't take HDMI sound IN either? What kind of receiver did you buy?! If you can't take it back, its really not the end of the world. I, like you, run sound to my receiver from my 360, ps3, and cable box via optical. And I run my receiver out to my tv via the red black/white (i don't know what they're called.. so we'll just call them old). Just make sure your receiver has enough optical sound inputs to match the hdmi inputs. I've seen receivers that had a lesser amount of one than the other.

As long as they were LESS than $10 each, you'll be fine.
The only way you could screw up was waste your money on expensive HDMI cables. Best Buy, and most other brick & mortar stores will try to rob you. When you're in a bind, and need a cable quickly, go to a local small retail electronics/stereo shop. They buy in bulk, for custom installs; ask nicely for the cheapest. They won't be on display. |

Monoprice is great. I've bought several hdmi cables from them, both the 24awg and 28awg. They both are excellent quality. I can't tell any pic quality difference between the two. I actually prefer the 28awg because it is more flexible and easier to route.

If you buy a low end TV, then buy low end cables. Remember though that the cable doesn't carry 1's & 0's. It's actually pulses of voltage. The goal is to lose the least amount of pulses using the best conductor & connection possible.

I run everything via HDMI to my TV and use optical out from the TV to my reciever. seems to work this way and saves you more headache fk |
