Not that I agree or disagree with how or what gets classified as M but not apples/apples comparison. M Sport on the E9X and F3X for example were mainly aesthetically driven with the aero kit and wheels. Today, the M performance models are significantly different than the 30i models.

So it makes more sense to count M Perfomance today than M Sport in the past.

The board of directors at BMW is about as confused as to what’s an M and what’s not an M as everyone else, so they count them together as it looks better to the bean counters… 🫘

Even the i4 M50 being M branded does not make it a sales leader in genera; only a leader in the M category.

The rest of the i4 sales are definitely greater than the M50. The M50 is normally stocked or if it is, it's a stripper.

Lot of elitism going on this thread. Why does it matter if BMW counts M perf cars in their “m” bucket?

Also why tear down m perf cars. As somebody who owns both an M2 and an X3 M40i, they are both excellent vehicles and both very fun to drive. And the X3 is better than any of its direct competitors. Let people buy and drive what they want and what they can afford.

Besides more folks buying m perf means the m branding is working, which means BMW has to keep investing in the “real” m cars to keep the halo.

Uhh no... the x3 30i as an example can have an identical suspension, steering rack and virtually everything as the m40i... w the sole difference being engine and brakes.... that engine is also available on a non m sport X5... so where is this so called M sportness? The X3M has an M engine, different steering rack, different suspension, different wheels, different traction / stability setup... there is a HUGE difference and it takes one hard turn into a corner to see the difference.

interesting... i too have or have had both of those vehicles, the m40i is a fine sporty suv however at its core outside of the engine and brakes its identical to a 30i... the m2 is nothing like an m sport car.

The only reason the I4M50 has sold well is due to the highly subsizdized leases, supported by tax credits. Once those go away, you no longer have a winner on your hands and more buyers would likely prefer the M340i, all things being equal.

Agreed, my M340i is the best all around car I have ever owned. It just does everything so well and has no obvious weaknesses. I owned a G87 M2 at the same time, the cars were very very similar. The difference between M ‘lites’ and M cars is smaller than it’s ever been in my opinion. Back when M cars had race derived naturally aspirated screamers for engines the performance and uniqueness delta was much larger.

Driving a BMW (M or not) doesn’t make anyone elite. They need to flex the private islands and jets to maybe be elitists.
