So will they continue to use Merc engines? I had thoughts/dreams about Aston Martin filling in if Merc drops out but now that is dead.

I think there are lots of moving parts here and now I'd bet serious money that Merc will stay in F1 and that Toto will continue to run the team now that Ferrari have guaranteed their use of veto power to prevent him from becoming the F1 Chieftain.

As you said with regard to Merc possibly dropping out, this is the lynchpin that almost assures they will not. I could be wrong but I think Merc is staying.

I sincerely hope Merc stays in F1 for the long term future. I am not as big a Ham fan as you, but I do get a good bit of satisfaction seeing someone so good just dominate year after year. Hopefully this year we can see 3 and possibly 4 (looking at you NOR/SAI) teams fighting more closely for that top spot.

What’s this about Toto becoming F1 chief? I haven’t heard about that before. Cool stuff! The sport needs a younger, modern executive at the top! His accomplishments working with Hamilton is an excellent example of what he can bring to the table.

We are agreed. I'd LOVE to see real fighting for the top spots because it's all the more sweet when HAM comes out on top. Winning against your team mate is the barometer in F1 and winning against an on-point Ferrari or Red Bull.

I'm certain Lewis will continue to win.

I would actually like to see the teams be reduced in testing to crash and safety testing and, thereafter, only have 2 days of running test and let the chips fall where they may after the season starts. With the new budget cap we would get to actually see who the cleverest teams and the best drivers are as they would all be starting at relatively the same place.

Great post!
Cheers-mk

There's a term called 'Conflicts of Interest' that Ferrari will almost certainly use in their veto if Wolff should apply for F1 top dog.

Wouldn’t it be very amusing if Red Bull ends up with Renault power units

To clarify, Ferrari didnt want Toto joining the FIA immediately. I believe they wanted a three year "gardening leave" period before someone were to make the switch from a team to the FIA.

For the time being, they will indeed use Mercedes engines. Mercedes actually owns a stake in Aston, (5-10% IIRC).

Mercedes is supposedly meeting in mid February to discuss it's future in F1. It is believed that, at worst, they would remain in the sport as an engine supplier.
