Who does everyone use to ship their cars across the states?
I have used Dependable Auto Shippers in the past and was going to use them again until they told me they dont permit items in the cabin of the car while its being transported.
I'm picking up a Porsche around the NYC/CT area but would need to put the factory rear engine lid in the passenger seat along with some interior panels. But all items are car related and not personal effects or housewares (what D.O.T. technically bans). I know there is Intercity Lines (what Jay Leno uses) or there are TONS of autobrokers with varies aliases like Direct Express Auto Transport. I just dont want to wait forever for the car to be picked or worse yet it gets loaded onto the truck but sits on the truck forever until the 18wheeler is packed full of cars. But a big metropolis route like NYC to Los Angeles should be pretty popular right? They said there are 60 trucks scheduled to do that route in the coming weeks (not sure if that is BS). |

I used DAS to ship my E90 and my previous S40, and correct, they do not allow items visible in item. I think the reason was similar as "don't leave valuables visible in your car".
I kept most of the things I'm not in rush in the trunk and locked with valet key.

Do you have pictures of your roadster? I have a '70 240z myself (what inspired me to get the Porsche; light weight cars are amazing to drive). |

I used dependable auto, took them over a month to ship my car from St. Louis to Houston. Some goon must've walked around in a dusty gravel lot before getting in my car to load it, it showed up with footprints on the floor mats and dusty handprints on the door.
In short, wasn't impressed. |

I used DAS also and didn't have the best experience. The pick-up went great, but the car got from FL to CA a few days early and I hadn't moved here yet. I told them when I first ordered the transport that I needed the car there by a certain day and that I would let them pick the pick-up date so that could happen. When the car got here early they tried to charge me storage fees. I made a big fuss and they waived them, but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. I'll be using someone else when I ship my 1 back to FL for the summer and then back to CA for the fall.

I think the most important part is finding a place with their own trucks, and not just a broker. The broker I used was very nice and took care of most things. But first it was "Ohh, he was waiting for another car, he'll be there tomorrow, then tomorrow again". Then once it was picked it it was one story after another and it took almost 2 weeks to ship from NY to AZ. When the car arrived it was covered in mud, hydrolic fluid, and everything else in the world. I literally couldn't see out my windows to drive it into my complex. I was not impressed and I shorted the guy somewhere around $400 if I remember correctly. The contract was a 1 week contract for 1.2k. It took 2 weeks. They broke the contract so in my mind I wasn't obligated to pay the full amount.

I had a good experience w/ www.unitedroad.com They were easy to work with and picked up/delivered on-time as promised and w/o hassles. E92 was transported from SC seller to my PA home. They also were one of the more reasonable quotes, but I used open carrier.

I have used www.carshippingcarriers.com to ship my Tesla Model S from Seattle, WA down to Tampa, FL. It went smooth and I I only paid $1200 for an enclosed hauler. It was worth every penny.
As far as tipping... you don't have to, but if you feel the job was done better then expected or faster then expected you might want to throw the person an extra $50-$100 for their time.

I used these guys last June to ship my daughter's truck from Charlottesville, VA to Malibu, CA and they were awesome: www.ritewayautotransport.com
My daughter then drove it back across country in August. (Because everybody should drive across the continental United States at least once in their lives.)
