******* DSLR Camera Help Please!!! *******
For those of you in the know about DSLR's, i'd like some help... I am going to buy a new camera, and i would like to get one of these, cos i am rather into photography (just lacking a kick arse camera)...
So, can anyone recomend a very good camera, sharp image, good colour, for a reasonable price? I really want to get into photography (i am especially into these kind of "top gear" looking images), learn about how to use filters, angles and lighting... Oh, and can filters be applied to any DSLR? Or do you need a specifil lens? What should i be looking at spending on a lens? And what what do i need to look for in one? Sorry for being such a camera n00b... Thanks guys! Any help apreciated!

check out this thread...http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...t=87271...then post up lots of questions. This is a common topic, but I'm sure you'll have some specific questions.
...like filters... Filters can be used on just about any lens that I've used - just like a film SLR. I assume you'll stick with Nikon or Canon here. I've never gotten into Canon, but I have a rather extensive experience with Nikon. Both are excellent, hold them and see which one is more comfortable to you. What filters do you have in mind?

Hi Astra,
Funny to see you asking about cameras cause I just bought a new one last Saturday. I wanted a quality camera under $A3000 and decided on a Canon EOS40D body and a Canon EFS 17-85mm lens with stabiliser. Like you I'm no expert photographer but want to learn more. I purchased via Camera House who are running a package deal on camera, lens, daylight filter, strap, cleaning cloths etc. They also included a photography course which they conduct a couple times a month. Can say that the initial pics I've taken are awesome and I'm really keen to learn the capabilities of the camera. I went to a friends birthday party Sat night. Everyone thought I was the "official" photographer. If we arrange another Sydney meet I'll bring it along. PM if you want more info, prices etc.

I use Fujifilm S3 Pro. I bought it used mint for $900(body only). I'm a long time shooter so I already have a collection of Nikon Lens. I like Nikon for the ED coating/lens lens(make the picture looks more natural but Vivid); not all Nikon/Nikkor lens has ED. The S3 Pro used to be top notch until they released S5 Pro recently. If you have the money, can't go wrong with S3 Pro.
My suggest to you is to go rent the equipments from pro shop and try. Or just go to pro shop and try them. |

I'm a Canon guy, so as a starting point I'm going to recommend the Canon 40D and the EF 24-70 f/2.8L lens. This is an ideal "walk around" setup. If you like ultra wide, consider the Sigma 10-20mm lens, as well.

There are other options than Canon or Nikon, but the fact is virtually every professional photographer uses one of the two. In sports, the vast majority are shooting Canon. The 1D MKIII being the preferred choice for those that can obtain it.
I have no doubt the Nikon D3 will be a great camera. But you won't see many people jumping Canon's ship if it means investing in a bunch of new glass. Some will, but they're fools to do so in my opinion. Just go to a photography store and mess around with the models. Learn about the specifics, find what you like and need. For me, it's Canon. But I/we digress. This topic turned to a different area of discussion, which is why I posted what I did above. The Canon 1D line and its other brand equivalents are not something that many amateur photographers are going to be buying, or needing. Lenses are the most important for amateur photographers. |

1. A camera is a light tight box with a hole in it.
2. It's a little bit the fiddle, much more who holds the bow. Look at Nikon and Canon, buy what is most comfortable. For me that was a Nikon at the time, and with my collection of glass, I won't be looking at Canon any time soon. The new D3 is a leap past the Mark III whatever, and may be my next camera, idk. The poster that questioned whether Canon or Nikon are it? No, the Mamiya and Hasselblad digital are FAR superior. Be ready to plunk down $35k+ for what you'd get from Nikon/Canon for $5k. Sure the Nikon / Canon leave a lot on the table compared to Mamiya or Hasselblad, but not $30k. Compared to other 35mm format bodies and lenses, I have not seen any other mfg come consistently close to what Nikon or Canon produce.
