Locking threads for traffic school advice??

I've been on a lot of boards over the last 20 years but this one seems to have the biggest Nanny issue.

I read the forum rules and I don't understand why that thread was locked. Can someone explain that to me please?

The question in that thread was for anyone with any experience with driving school in TN regarding license, points, options etc. since it is not explicitly stated on the ticket or the accompanying literature. That's why it's in the off-topic board.

Someone has a serious control problem. If we were at a club event and having this conversation would you walk up to me and tell me to shut up? Because that's essentially what you did. I have no problem respecting the local rules. What you did went beyond that.

If you desire, say the word and I'll leave this forum. I've given my business to your supporters. I can just as easily give it to someone else.

Yes, they did. Original boards popped up around 2004 although most simply scrolled. This format came about around 1999.

BTW, my grandparents used to live in Dix Hills. Spent a lot of summers there. #1 Stony Brook Ln I think. Miss those days.

The internet was around in 1994 but it wouldn't be recognizable today. Also it was not at all widespread. Little usage. Most people still used dial up and AOL or BBS (bulletin board systems).

There was pre-internet communicatom though; for example, AOL was around in 1994, it was a DOS and then Windows 3.1 software with chat rooms, buddy list, etc.

Also BBS (Bulletin Board System) were popular. I used to run one with my brother. People would dial up your phone number directly from their modem, and connect 1-1 to your modem (think of a website that can only connect one user at a time), and be able to download stuff, upload stuff, post and read messages, etc. BBS were non graphical for the most part, so it was all various DOS-like commands to get around and do stuff. We used to play text-based games as well. You could download images but not view them directly over the connection. And to download what today takes a second or less, back then it was time for some yard work or a couple mile walk around the block. Insanely slow by today's standards. The concept of downloading gigabytes, at least in the mainstream, simply didn't exist.

Remember, back then a 14.4k modem was pretty fast for the common folk, with 9600 baud (9.6kbps) being much more common. I don't recall if 56k modems were available, but if they were, they were still "high end" at that time, I think.

These likely were the precursor to modern day forums.

Jeez, I am only 32 and sound like I am describing what it was like to hang with the dinasaurs. Tech has really gone to a whole new level since then.

Surely those of you who commented are smart enough to realize by the sentence that followed that I mistyped 2004 for 1994. At that time I was on a Mustang Saleen board. In 1995-6 I began to frequent www.corral.net and as I mentioned, it was a live scrolling board. If you wanted to go back to a post you made to look for responses you'd have to do some serious scrolling.

Forums have really evolved in the last 15 years. It's odd to think that there are probably people on this board who don't even remember life before the internet.

As far as not being recognizable, I wouldn't go that far. AOL, Netscape and IE really began to evolve in the 94-96 time frame. It was definitely less refined but it wasn't that far off from some of the stripped down websites out there right now.

AOL.com didn't even exist yet in 1994 - it came out in 1996. AOL in 1994 was a standalone desktop application. Many major companies didn't have websites yet.

And while it's true that some stripped down basic HTML site today might seem similar, even the oldest sites still around will be HTML 3.0 or 4.0 spec. In 1994, it was HTML 2.0 spec (which was just released in 1994), and DHTML (dynamic HTML, precursor to modern Javascript effects and interactive stuff you see on websites) didn't really take off until version 4 browsers were released, around 1997.

You say 94-96 time frame, but most of the v1.0 browsers, including IE, didn't exist yet in 1994, as IE 1.0 was released in 1995, and in 1994 Netscape was still Mosaic. As the 90s progressed things started to move a lot faster.

The late 90s saw a huge boom of internet use, catalyzed by advances in browser technology as well as the emergence of DSL and Cable modem in many more households than previously.

I think that even in 1999 the internet was a quantum leap from what was around in 1994, let alone today.

and it was agonizing downloading porn
cuz the picture would load block by block
by the time you could see it was a crappy picture
you had already wasted 30 seconds of your life
and when I upgraded to a 56K modem, I was blown away
double the speed!!

Dunno. Probably made a snap judgement and felt it glorified speeding.

I still haven't figured out in TN if the traffic school makes the ticket disappear as the cop said or just reduces the points to 0 but keeps it on the record for the next few years.

I was hoping I'd find someone here who'd been through this in TN.

Don't know about TN, but when I took my traffic class in MI, I was told the ticket was still on record for a couple years, and 0 points, then the ticket would disappear. I actually got a speeding ticket out here and needed a copy of my MI driving record, and I only show two tickets from 2008 for minor violations (neither of which was the ticket I went to the class for).

I don't know how long it took to come off my record, or if it was on after, but I was told that it would appear on my record, and the offense was originally in 2007.

The points don't get assessed to your DMV record when electing Driving School. The citation will likely be on your record for something around 7 years or so.
