My M235i: Bolt-ons + JB4 = Dyno Results

Hi!
I went to European Auto Source (eAs) to get some dyno runs done today to see what my car is currently putting down. If anyone remembers my old thread, I did a baseline of 307whp/322wtq. Thank you Tom and Steve for the fantastic customer service and you guys run an awesome shop ! If you want or need to get any type of work done on your BMW or want to just grab some parts, make sure you contact eAs! Also, thank you Terry @ BMS for being so quick to review my my logs and giving me the A-OK to run Map 2 and Map 7 for the JB4. Terry literally reviewed all of my logs and responded to my e-mails within a few minutes.

Disclaimer: These numbers are not an accurate representation of the total possible power my mods can safely producing at its current octane level. Why? Because our cars come with an electronic wastegate (EWG) which requires a special EWG harness connected to the JB4 which has yet to be released. The harness will allow more accurate boost manipulation, so the car should technically produce some more horsepower and torque. In any case, I am more than happy with the power it puts down and I hope to see what it'll be like once I get an FMIC and the EWG harness put in . I have a feeling Map 7 has some more power in it because the horsepower and torque kept going up after every pull. I decided to stop since it was getting late and my car has done enough runs for the day.

The discovery: The stock tires are no longer adequate from 1st to 3rd gear :P.

Current mods: aFe Intake, ER Chargepipe, ER Downpipe, M-Performance exhaust and JB4. I used ~95 octane fuel by mixing my current 91 octane with 5 gallons of Sunoco 100 octane at a local 76 gas station.

Finally!

Glad you posted the numbers. Looks like the additional parts (charge pipe, downpipe, and muffler) gave you higher numbers over my JB4 Stage 1. Really excited that you are getting this without the EWG control.

What is your long-term fuel strategy? The 100 octane boost is very expensive for everyday driving.

I find it very interesting that your modded torque curve looks similar (and better on the low end) then a 2014 Vette:

The Z51 does 0-60 in 3.9 but weighs about 7% less and makes about 8% more power compared to you on the top end because the vette motor doesn't fall off as fast after 5krpm.

I wouldn't be surprised if you are in 4.4 second territory now 0-60 and I bet your midrange before 5k feels even punchier than the vette because of your much lower gearing.

All this for what, $3000 in mods soaking wet? Impressive.

I know its been long overdue, but I'm glad we could have a nice comparison. Are you running 93?

I don't plan on doing this often at all and just wanted to see what it would do on the other maps. I'm pretty much going to just be doing 91 and map 1 for most of the time. I do have an E85 station near me, so I'll probably play with a mixture once with the EWG harness is out as I would rather have that in my car than 100 .

Yep, 93 high test is what they serve here in Virginia and neighboring states. As much as I appreciate the numbers you are getting now I'm still leaning towards a catback exhaust and Dinan Stage 2 (when released). If those two changes would give me 360 HP and 400 ft lb of torque to the wheels I would be very satisfied. Keeping it at a mild tune for the upcoming summer is a good idea for me right now. Once I get a couple thousand miles on the clock I can evaluate my upgrade choices then.

Really curious what caused the M235i with M Performance parts in the "One Lap of America" to fail. Bumping up boost too much might lead to major issues without some history on the car first. Again, keep all us informed and pumping out the power so we can learn from it.

I plan on probably just staying Map 1 for 99.9% of the time as I don't need the power and was just curious about Map 2 and Map 7. I don't think I'll be pushing it any further than this since I like to keep it mild and I never go WOT if it over 80F outside lol. Right now, I hope someone will pick up where I left off and put some higher octane or E85 in it as I don't think I'll really progress much further or get the EWG wires (yet).

I agree with the stock tires.. im an idiot and got the wheel an tire package from BMW. Does anyone know if i can go a little bigger and they would still replace them? or if anyone has any ideas that would be great. I have basically the same set up with the EWG wires and 40% e85 will be going to the Dyno this weekend to see some numbers.

@schap12 - Check the shock clearance as you might be able to go one size up, or just keep the size the same and get a sticky compound. If you want something sticky and streetable, take a look at the 200 treadwear tires like the Hankook RS3.

Please update me and others on what you're getting on E85 . I have a station by my house and I would love to try the fuel out since I ran it in my other cars. Are you doing Map 2 and Map 7 as well?

Also, do you require the FF wires?

well the issure is that i want to be able to have BMW replace my rubber if I get a "nail" in the tire. if i switch rubber and wheels i dont think that option still applies or does it?

And e85 is awesome I have FF wires and EWG. im hitting a good 16.5-17 on map 7 and map 2 is great also

@schap12 - It won't apply if its not the original tires, so you're stuck with those.

Can't wait to see your dyno! I hope you break 400whp with E85 since 95 octane sucks in comparison lol.

i just got jb4 working with the latest firmware on my car. i have to ask, how does it feel compared to a stock? I'm trying to pin point if everything on mine is working properly.

when it was stock it will pull up to redline every gear, but with the jb4 it feels like theres turbo lag and pulls hard down low and run flat in the upper rpm.

It feels quicker than stock, but because the tires keep spinning its hard to gauge with butt-dyno :P.

I don't feel any extra turbo lag, but it does run flat in the upper RPM because most of the power is generated down in the low to mid, because of the small turbo. It'll naturally run out of breath up top since it can't flow that much more.

I have my DP, MPE and JB4 and holy shit what a different vehicle.

The sound is absolutely intoxicating. I don't care what anyone says once you put this DP + MPE on it's absolutely the best sounding turbo I6 I've ever heard. (disregard Turbo 911)Better than my DP's + MPE on my N54.

i have JB intake, JB4, MPE and although it does feel faster, the power curve definitely feels different now. hard down low, weak up top. how does ur feel?

the first gear i start in feels fast, but rest after that feels like the turbo run out of juice

I just got the flex fuel wires, so I have E35 in the car now. It feels way better than with 100 octane lol.
