550xi vs M3

Anyone else thinking that 4.4L TT V8 with 445 hp / 489 torques and AWD in 2014 550xi trumps the 3.0L 6cyl 425 hp / 406 ft lbs in the M3? And makes the 550xi a much more comfortable all year rounder? And for the same or lesser price?

I can hear some of you guys already: "Hey, one is a sports car, the other is a family sedan! How can you compare the two 4 door sedans?!"

Would this be your first BMW? Sounds like you haven't driven a 5 Series vs a 3.

Ignore the power for the sake of your comparisons. Compare how each drives. If you want comfortable then you should be looking more towards the 5 (any 5).

Um no. Completely different cars.

Starting with the fact that the m3 is 1100+ lbs lighter

Yes, 1100 lbs. not to mention no LSD, soft suspension, built on 7 series platform etccccccc

5 series is a living room on wheels. I'd hardly call it a sedan if I could, it's more like a lowered lincoln navigator. I drove a 550 and an M5, and I wouldn't buy either if they cost less than an M3, just my personal opinion.

I currently own an E92 M3 and did ED on it (4 laps on the Ring). I just put my order in for a 550i for ED. When I get it back in the US I'm going to upgrade the suspension and get some sports tires on it. It will basically be a baby M5.

Lowered Lincoln Navigator?? Wow, it can't be that bad, it's an Ultimate Driving Machine, ain't it??

Something tells me weight has nothing to do with his comparisons. He's weighing a 5 series against a 3. lol

In fact his post about comfort, not which is a track rat.

Somehow when I think 'track rat', an image of an $85k 4dr sedan, large or small, does not pop into my mind...

And yet this one is marketed for the track use in BMW videos.

Good marketing, I'm sure. Other than a small inconvenience of being at odds with BMW's owner's manual instructions which expressly prohibit track use. Because there's no surer way to void the warranty on your shiny new (leased?) M3 than by letting your friendly BMW Service find out you've been tracking it over the weekend, stuff broke, and now you want it fixed under warranty.

My point exactly.

So if M3 is not for the track, by BMWs own admission, what's the point of paying $85k+ for an 'enhanced' performance 3 series?? At least the old car had a screaming V8 that differentiated it from the 'lesser' 3 series line. This new car, as great as the marketing machine paints it, is the same ol' 3.0L 6 cyl, albeit with some more power. I don't see any leap forward in engineering solutions, just some good marketing. Remains to be seen what the reviewers have to say about it end of June.

The 550i weighs close to as much as the big american muscle cars do, and the Camaro and Mustang GT are meeting or beating the M3 on the track. It's not quite all about weight. The M3 is no lightweight either.

Per bmwusa.com 550xi weighs 4400 lbs. while marketing materials may suggest a low 3300 lbs, I'm prepared to wager a token amount that M3 will not weigh 3300 lbs in the real world when it debuts.

You answered your own question. Some people don't want to settle for a bland, albeit fast daily driver. The F10's chassis has not been tailored exclusively for on limit handling and agility. The M3/M4 will see some light track duty and spirited driving among its owners. Hard to do with a 4000+ lb car.

Trying to justify that a 550 is better than an m3? Just not worth it. Each have different use

No, it won't. I've driven several LCI 550's with the MSport suspension. Drive an M5 and get back to me. Completely different car. Like they aren't even related.
