Sail mode...

We'll, I keep finding out new things (well, I knew about them, but not tried them) and the latest has been 'Sail Mode' or Coasting, as it's labelled in Efficient Dynamics. I'd put the car into EcoPro mode yesterday (first time since I took delivery) and, as I was coming down the hill towards home, I recall thinking "Hmmm, this thing's going like a rocket down this hill!" And then it dawned on me, yup - Sail Mode.

So, I had. Bit of a play on the way home and it's pretty damn seamless, the transmission just disengages and I guess you're in what I was always taught was called 'Angel Gear', with no 'drag' of the engine or drivetrain components and the instantaneous fuel reading showing 0.0L/100km.

Interesting and a bit disconcerting, but I will play a bit more. The fuel economy graph is pretty cool too, need to play with that a bit more though as it seems to be malfunctioning and showing unreasonably high numbers just kidding. I did say EcoPro first time yesterday, right?

you have the AT? I coast in neutral all the time with MT cars. it's a hypermiling technique if you are trying to achieve maximum fuel economy.

I suspect it's a lot safer when the car does it for you

Is the battery being recharged in sail mode? I suspect it may not be as i thought the alternator is connected to the engine side of the gearbox. If it is recharging it may suggest the alternator is after the gearbox and perhaps even connected to the drive shaft?

I'll check the graphic next time, but I don't think it does indicate the battery is being charged.
