Engine fault: BMW has recalled several car models because of a defect.

More than 3000 BMW owners have been left fuming by a national recall after the discovery of a defect in the car's fuel heating system that could cause a fire, even when the engine is turned off.

Their anger has been compounded by BMW's failure to provide replacement parts.

Owners received correspondence from BMW Australia over the past month warning that a short circuit could occur in the fuel-filter heater.

''In an unfavourable case, if a short circuit occurs when the vehicle is in motion, this may also lead to a fire in the vehicle, when it is switched off,'' the letter from BMW Australia states.

BMW Australia said it had been notified of the defect by BMW Germany, which has issued a global recall on several diesel models built between August and November 2009.

One Melbourne-based owner of a BMW X5 told Fairfax Media he was told the replacement parts were not available and was asked by a BMW dealership if he wanted to join a waiting list.

''The response from BMW Australia has been pathetic and I've taken it up with their head office in Munich, who have been far more helpful,'' the owner said.

BMW Australia product communications manager Scott Croaker said the recall had affected about 120,000 vehicles worldwide.

''Parts supply in the early stages is limited and needs to be managed carefully to ensure every market can start the rectification process as soon as possible,'' Mr Croaker said.

He said the chances of a malfunction in Australia were ''very slim indeed''.

The vehicles affected include diesel models of the previous 5 Series sedan and touring, 1 Series, X3 as well as current model X5 and 7 Series models.

Last week, an Iranian-born man smashed up his $170,000 BMW M6 coupe with a sledgehammer in front of the Frankfurt motor show, after complaining to BMW in Italy and Germany about excessive vibration and rough gear changes.

Pourmohseni Hadi claimed BMW had shifted responsibility between offices and failed to adequately respond to his grievances.

I have to admit BMW service is one of the worst (compared to my previous merc)... they always shift blame between offices, even in Sydney.
