Would you drive a new 335i across Australia?

So, as per the other thread, my car appears to be being shipped to Melbourne, bypassing Perth.

I assume BMW will then either truck or rail it 4000km BACK to Perth.

If it were you, would you drive it yourself from Melbourne if you could organise it?

Whilst I am sorely tempted, the stone chip risk, broken windscreen risk, animal hitting risk, new car fault risk and the general bad way to break in a new engine, would lead me to discard the idea.

I guess I just have to be patient. Again. And again. Sigh.

Get a car bra they are about $350 just for the trip. They normally come with mirror covers to when you get them custom made and go for it

Thanks Spikey - I can see the way this is going to go... I may as well close the thread now.

I wouldn't do it for all the reasons you have mentioned, car bra or not.

I would just because I like to drive. Ssying that, registration and insurance would be more of a concern

Yes, that's what my head says too. If I applied my work principles of risk analysis, there's no way it'd get the green tick.

Don't do it, Simon. I love my car and don't particular how many ks I put on it - hey that's what the bloody thing is for! I only keep an eye on it because I have full circle.

But I would not in a million years put 4000km on the car because it has landed in the wrong place. Let BMW fix it. You are keen to get the car asap which is natural and your heart is saying let's just get it. But your head knows better.

Yup, done (or not, as the case may be). Apparently, the strike in SA has caused heaps of this type of issue and is causing a nightmare for dealers. I've been told (nicely) that I'm not an orphan. I just hope that BMW Oz is helping the dealers out.

How are you liking you're loaner at the moment anyway? I know it's a far cry from the 335 you have coming but I guess at least they have you in something until you get yours right?

I went from a 135i MSport to a 318d plain jane loaner, but with Business Nav and possibly enhanced BT.

I am fairly happy with the 318d, doesn't accelerate like the 135 did, of course, but it's not a piece of shit either, especially when you shove it into DS (push across to left).

The mileage is great, wished it had that to look forward to (just filled up once in over 1000km), the 135 felt like I used to almost fill it up daily! Well, weekly may be more accurate.

Loving having the IDrive and Nav, let's me get used to the systems so then I can concentrate in all the new fruit in the new one when I get it (almost fully loaded).

All the above and the fact that I'm not paying repayments for what will probably be 3 or 4 months is the flip side of the waiting.

Simon....

If you bought it from a dealer in Perth can they even prep the car in Melbourne?

My 328i already has 50k km on the clock after 1.5 years. If the dealer could organise rego and insurance to be covered by the time i pick up the car in Perth, I would fly there and pick it up. It would be a good opportunity to have a wineries week trip

Simon, think about it- what other reason/excuse would you ever have to drive across Australia? None, you wouldn't do it!

Settle dudes, it's not going to happen The thought arose because a mate of mine has just done it, on a bike. I've also done the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to 12 Apostles and would have loved to do that in a decent car.

But sanity prevails. Lalalalala....

Yeah I happened to be at a funeral yesterday for a non-old person so after things like that, you get in the "fuck it lets do it!" mentality
