Is this turbo lag?

Hi all,

As you may have seen, I have a 318d F30 loaner and I've been pretty impressed with the diesel, particularly the 4 lives it has courtesy of Eco, Comfort, Sports and DS modes. I'm pretty sure the 335 doesn't come in a diesel version in Australia (haven't checked yet, the BMW site doesn't play too nice with my iPad), but at 6.8l/100km, I'd be tempted if it was and I hadn't ordered!

Anyway, I pulled out of a slip road the other day and had to put my foot down to do it safely. The car just sat there for what seemed like 2 secs, but was probably .5 - 1s, before it took off like a scalded cat. I just thought it was the baby engine, but was recounting to a mate last night and he reckons it was turbo lag. Didn't even realise the 318d was turbo'd, but he reckons it'd have to be (again, haven't checked).

So, was that the infamous turbo lag that I've heard about but never experienced in the 135i? Why the difference? Diesel? Lower end model? Engine?

Just curious!

Ken...

By now you probably know the 335 is an inline 6 cylinder turbo petrol engined car. However, there is also a more powerful 2 litre diesel engine (compared to the 318d) in the 3 Series - the 320d.

Pretty much all diesels are turbo assisted. Your 135i experience is, in most part, due to the power & torque of the 3 litre engine working so well before the turbo kicks in as opposed to the considerably less powerful (and purposefully detuned) 2 litre diesel engine from the 318d.

Still, there will be a delay in all of the turbo assisted cars, some more noticeable than others. Lots of threads about this 'issue'

Sounds about right. Used to be able to get a 330d for the e90.

My e90 320d in AT starts in second gear, further compounding the lag slightly.

Ah, interesting. As the gear's not displayed, unless you're manually shifting, I'm not sure how to work this out. Unless you just pull back in DS and see if it changes to 2 or 3?

Definitely turbo lag. I had a 320d loaner for 3 days last week. I tried to pull out of a side road and had to floor it as i misjudged the speed of a fast approaching bus.

I missed my 328i big time. Had to wait 1-1.5 sec for any acceleration. Then the car became a bucking bronco kicking the tail out.

It was this characteristic that did in the 320d for me on the demo drive and tipped it in favour of the 328i

The only consolation is you can marvel at the incredibly low fuel consumption of the diesel. It is truly astonishing considering the in gear acceleration you get from it. In fact, i would drive with a lead foot all the time if i owned one as i would still be laughing at the bowser.

Yes had a e90 320d and an F10 520d. Both had bloody turbo lag. Stamp on the accelerator wait for 1 sec and whoosh it kicks it. A bit dangerous if u have to change lanes suddenly or accelerate thro an intersection.

Thanks mate, I'm looking forward to it. No word from the dealer about a rescheduled boat ride

CKau, yes, I filled up for the first time on the weekend, I think it's been 3 weeks. Averaged 6.9l/100km, city driving only. My 135i would have been around 12 to 13!

Secret agent, I'd certainly have to change my driving style if I was driving one forever. Don't think I could handle it. As I said though, if the 335d doesn't have it, I'd have one, I think!
