Upgrade from less loaded 2012 to more loaded 2013?
Hey all,
I have a base 2012 328i with 36,000 miles (premium package, xenon headlights, automatic high beams, BMW assist w/enhanced BT, heated seats) and I am contemplating updating to a brand new 2013 328i (technology package, lighting package, premium package, driver assistance package). I'm really into technology so the idea of built in Navigation and the HUD are very appealing. Not to mention I miss PDC and the backup camera. Those of you with similar packages...do you find yourself enjoying the navigation? I tried it out in a test drive and it seemed fine...but it's always good to get other opinions :-) |

I love my 2013 GPS, works and looks great, im an IT and I would hate myself If I did not have it.
If you are upgrading, do it right at this time... Go with: 2013 Sport or M-Sport 335i with nav Or 2014 Sport or M-Sport 328i with the NEW nav Go it?! Make that upgrade worth awhile, and don't ever buy another base model.

Well, I'm trying to keep my car payment down so a 2014 is pretty much out of the question. I'd like to find a new 2013 modern line with all the stuff I want but so far no luck. The model I described has everything I want (except sport or modern line but I can live without that as long as I have my technology packages.)
I really wish I hadn't settled when I bought my 2012... but I was just overcome with BMW lust! |

If you want to save money, look for a car with the standalone nav option and not the tech package. (Some people swear by the HUD, but I never miss it.) Mine also has just the heated seats option, no cold weather package. That kept it just under $50k with the rest of the options I wanted, and I never feel like the car is missing anything.
Good luck finding a Modern Line. I wanted one, too, the architect in me preferring the textured wood trim. But, the inability to option the sport automatic killed it for me.

as a person that works in the tech industry...i always like to have the latest and greatest. plus having nav in the car is nicer than relying on your phone or a garmin (even if it is cheaper). it looks nicer in the car too.
if you want to save a few bucks, do as Jesse mentioned, skip the tech pkg and just do nav. I have the tech, and as cool as the HUD is, i can live without it. Getting heated seats without the cold weather is also a good idea too. if I were you and the numbers were in good order...id go for the 2013 in a heartbeat. but be quick because 2013's are selling out fast

Yeah I think that the fold down seats in the back would be nice too. I do wish the 2013 model supported Siri Eyes Free though.
I've been reading that certain MY2013 cars got an upgraded iDrive (better navigation, faster etc). Did the 328i get that, or was it saved until MY2014? Last edited by abstractmethod; 10-03-2013 at 12:20 PM.. |

Every mans finances are his own business, but I can't help saying: maybe an upgrade from 2012 to 2013 would be expensive? I mean even if you get a great price, you lose sales tax and interest if you are on a loan. I noticed you mentioned keeping payments low. 36k miles isn't very much at all. Unless you have started seeing recurring problems with the car, which would be a different situation!
I can totally relate to your feeling, though. I got a base model with nothing in terms of tech . Still happy with my car, maybe the only thing I miss is the nav. But a nice cigarette lighter mount for my garmin works just great. Remember.. It's all about the handling and the engine and the transmission with bmws! Don't take offense, just sharing a different perspective.

Different strokes for different folks. I'd say if there is nothing wrong with your car and money is even a small concern, keep your car and let depreciation taper down a bit.
If you are set on going to grab another car, my personal opinion is you have to have DHP or at the very least sport suspension, if it's an auto, you should get sports auto. Sports seats are a must too. I personally wouldn't want to drive a car without HUD again, but that's just me. I think the PDC and cameras are cool and wouldn't get a BMW without them, but wouldn't say they are 'musts' on my personal priority list if we have to cut something. I dont really see a need for drivers assistance either. My own car I have everything but the Drivers Assistance package. I could live without the rear electronic folding screen in the rear window and umm not sure what else I dont find much use for though. Perhaps I'm a poor example. |

Given the depreciation hit you'll then be taking on the two cars (one new and one nearly new) then it would have to be because either you just absolutely gotta have these technology things and the question should have answered itself already, or money is no object for you and so why aren't you looking at better cars in the first place?
