easiest ipod solution

Alright i've 'ed and I've read a bunch of posts about problems and solutions with all the different ipods. There's almost too much to read with the search, but basically what I'm getting is that the new classics screw up with charging/battery, and the 3rd gen (which I have) is completely incompatible.

So the easiest solution would be to find a used 5th gen so that I can be sure i'll get the ipod up and working with idrive without 5 trips into the service department? I haven't been able to find anyone saying they have issues with their 5th gen ipod. I just don't want to have to spend days dealing with chords, software updates, random disconnects, and other annoyances. I just want to USE the ipod.

I'm having charging and disconnect issues with my gen 5.5 iPod Video. I'm running v26 software at the moment - v27.1 is being loaded in a week or so.

I had no problems with my 5th generation Ipod. I do have the charging issue with my ipod classic.
