6FL - PROBLEM - Gaps/pauses between tracks

I've recently taken delivery of a UK spec 320D SE with the 6FL extra (Non-iDrive).

When it's playing an album, of separate files, within the same folder, it pauses for approximately 2 seconds between each song. This is identical to the length of the pause when I tell it to manually move between tracks.

I've spoken to BMW UK and they've said that this is expected behaviour when playing from a USB stick. But would be OK if playing from an iPod.

I have tried a 4 GB flash stick, and a Seagate 8 GB 4200 RPM micro hard drive, and both are the same.

Does anyone else suffer from this issue, and can anyone offer a solution that doesn't involve joining the album into one continous file?

I have an iPod gen 5.5 (80GB video model) without i-Drive in my 335i and it has gapless playback for albums like Dark side of the Moon and Sheer Heart Attack. I think this might be a iTunes driven feature that the iPod supports. So, they have absolutely no gaps. For non-gapless playback albums, the delay is 1-2 seconds - but I would expect that.

I have that problem as well on my Iomega HDD. SUCKS, for albums that have continuous songs.

yup, I have a 40gb firelite with over 14gb of music... pressing "next" takes a good couple seconds before the next track starts playing...

I expect a gap after I press next.

The problem is when it's playing an ablum, which doesn't have gaps when played on my computer. When it reaches the end of one track and automatically moves to the next then I get the gap.

From a technology stand point. The car should be able to decode the MP3 into the CD players anti-skip buffer. In the same way that my old portable CD/MP3 player does. So when it reaches the end of one track, it just starts buffering the next.

I believe this is the difference between using a device with a file system interface (USB stick, portable HDD) and using the iPod cable. When you're using the file system interface is probably reads the tracks one at a time and does not do any sort of buffering.

The difference with the iPod cable is that the iPod itself is playing the music, not the car. Because the iPod is playing the music, there's no gap between songs. This is also probably why it's so much faster to index songs off an iPod when using the cable. It sends custom commands to the iPod to only retrieve the data it wants, rather than having to build an index from the entire file system.

Gapless playback with 6FL and USB stick

Does anybody know if there was ever a program update that introduced gapless playback for USB sticks on 6FL in a MY07 E92?

I just had my whole system updated as of last week. It still has the gap. I complained to the Serive guy and he didn't understand until I actually got him in the car and showed it to him. He made a call with no luck and said that he'd get back to me.

Note, in my 2010 with the internal harddrive, you can rip a CD into it. The gap occurrs on these ripped CD's as well, so the problem cannot my attributed to my MP3's on a stick. Note that the Internal CD ripper rips into WMA, not MP3.
