BMW Portable Navigation Device (PND) ?!

(* I posted on bimmerforums as well)

I recently bought a new 328xi a few days ago. Dealer emailed me this pdf and asked me if I was interested in this new Portable Navigation Device from BMW. I think it is just a re-labeled Tom Tom. He quoted me $700 for the dealer install. I don't know how to post a pdf as an image on here, this was the only way I could think of.

Any thoughts?

Sweet. Yes your thread is exactly what I posted. I'm not sure how I feel about having holes in my dash.

Thanks for the reply.

What's the advantage versus purchasing your own aftermarket GPS and having it installed well?

i think it is re-labeled tom-tom or garmin. I saw the same exact thing on MINI site with mini label on it. save yourself a couple hundreds and get one yourself.

Thanks for the reply.
It looks like the bracket fits behind the trim, in between the trim and dash, Probably no holes visible if you decide to remove it. Once it's out and someone posts the instructions, I am sure we will know.
I am not a big Nav person, but it would seem to me once you pay for the part and install at the dealer it will probably be as much as getting factory Nav. I don't see the point But, to each his own.

That's pretty funny because iDrive software - maps etc is from a company named Navigon who now acutally makes portable navigation devices.
Also a big advantage of having an after market nav is that the nav's in the cars usually cost more and are out of date. The latest nav devices show company logos (think double arches for McDonald's) AND do text to speech actually saying the name of the road to turn on rather than turn in 300 feet. They also usually cost less to upgrade the maps.
That being said I have iDrive.

It's a Garmin Nuvi 360 with BMW logo in the splash screen and BMW dealer locations pre-loaded. Don't get it from BMW. Buy your own Nuvi from Garmin.

While I feel validated that BMW chose to carry Nuvi (a GPS I've been using since before having the car), I can see a few cons for the dealer-installed option:

1) It needs to drill 5 big holes on your dash.

2) It leaves an ugly mount on your dash permanently, even when the GPS itself is removed. It does come with a cover for the mount to make it slightly less hideous, however.

3) The kit from BMW does not include a suction cup mount nor a cigar lighter adaptor. You'll have to get them yourself if you want to use it in another car.

4) The power is supplied from a circuit that won't turn off until the car goes into deep sleep (after 4 to 30 minutes). You'll have to turn it off manually if you don't want a bright screen to advertise itself in the dark.

The startup splash screen in Nuvi can be set to any picture you like. Be it the BMW or Mini or whatever logo. There were a few good ones in the other board if you wish to make it look "factory".

So the instructions pdf says that it only takes 1 hour to install... can the dealer deviate from this price?

I got the unit and it comes with a lot of stuff... there's a BUNCH of adapters and such so that you don't need to use the cig plug... and the drilling is a real deterrance, but the main cradle comes with the plug when you dont' want to leave it sitting around.

It's cool though because when you turn it on, the main screen is BMW, and it doesn't say garmin or anything anywhere. Additionally, on the main body of the nuvi, instead of "Garmin Nuvi," it's BMW...

Now, the coolest feature, imo, is the fact that on the navigation screen, rather than having an arrow, you have a few options to choose from. And those options being e92's in different colors. I decided to use the silver e92 (there's no white), but it looks pretty darn close to it...

all in all, i'm happy.

Oh yea, regarding installation... yes, service dealers can deviate from BMWNA's suggested install price. I went to Towson BMW, and they quoted me 2.5hours for it (simply because they have never seen it before, it requires extreme precision (when drilling the holes), and will most likely never do the install again after my car)...
Now, for 2.5 hours, the installation charge comes out to approximately $300... i told them that this is nonsense, and you really can't take so long with somethign bmwna says should only take 1 hour... so i negotiated and haggled down the price to $175 flat (for about 1.5hrs labor), regardless of how long those techs take working on it.

I'm not up to drilling any holes but there should be a way to mount it. Now I can get one
